the other band the Connor admin-

many snbstautial public improve-

the past four years.
The contest is not without po-

strates the fact that party fealty is
esteemed very lightly in the next
largest city in Texas. Many of the
Democratic leaders are sounding
the slogan for the regular nominee
but at the sarner time many promi-
nent Democrats are aligned with
the Connor faction. The “busi-

be almost solidly with this side.
Besides the result will show the
degree of cohesiveness among the
Republicans of the city* who have
for some time wanted just such an
opportunity.

State officers, lecturers and other
prominent Alliance lights conven-
ed in special meeting here to-day.
They say that tfie meeting iA in
pursuance of a call by the recent
Ocala, Fla., convention for the good
of the order and not for political
business.
The meeting of the business man-
agers of Southern .Alliance ex-
changes adjourned late to-night.
Resolutions were adopted to the ef-
fect that it costs 8 cents a pound to
raise cotton, and urging southern
farmers to reduce their acreage
this year bjrat least one-third. A
resolution was adopted favoring the
establishment of a cotton factory
at Birmingham, the product of
which will be raised by the Alli-
ance, and a committee was appoint-
ed on that subject.
