Erom the Newark Advertiser: John
Walsh of Plainfield, while on a search
for specimens in botany, was lost in
“Dismal Swamp," a marshy tract of
woodland, and stayed all night unable
to find his way out. He perched him-
self on the trunk of a fallen tree and
bided his time until daylight. He dar-
ed not move from the tree for fear of
Btumbling in the darkness into the
morass or into quicksand. The marsh
is three miles long and a mile wide,
and he had no idea of direction. He
was awakened in the morning by the
barking of dogs and managed to follow
the sound well enough to get out.

Dress is an important consideration
to the Empress of Germany. She buys
yearly 100 evening and state dresses,
twice as many carriage, and visiting
costumes, and about 100 demi-toilets
and house dresses—450 frocks all told!
But there is one woman who. has a
still greater wardrobe. Indeed, she has
more gowns than any woman of! this

500 women to care for .them. She is

Labor-Saving Shear*.
A German who believes in labor-
saving devices has patented a pair of
shears' with a spring attachment.
When a cut has been made and the
shears are closed, the spring opens
the blades slightly. When they are
wide open.-ready for rutting, the ar-
rangement acts in the reverse way and
assists in closing them Both actions
lighten the work of the cutter.
Puerto Rico Once a Forest.
Puerto Rico, say the scientist*, was
originally an immense forest from the

to the giant trec*s of the mountain 'Side

sense that it is dotted by many beau-
