Older homes may be
cheaper to heat, cool
COLLEGE STATION —
While most houses built before
1940 don't have the advantages
ot modern insulation materials,
thev still mas lx* cheaper to heat
and cool, sav researchers with
the Center for Energy and Min-
eral Resources (CEMR) at Tex-
as A&M University.
Center researchers report
that studies show older houses
tend to use less energy for both
heating and cooling, and prob-
ably require fewer improve-
ments against the weather than
people expect.
One ol the most universal
energy-saving characteristics of
old houses is operable windows,
researchers report.
In addition, the houses often
include rooftop ventilation, sky-
lights, exterior balconies,
porches, wide overhangs, awn-
ings and shade trees.

Ala
Sherwin plant manager David V
Hopkins, who accepted the award,
said "the significance of this ac-
complishment is further emphasized
by the fact that major changes in our
raw materials were made, and the
plant configuration was modified
during 1984
"I am extremely proud of our em
ployees for this fine achievement in
quality control and look forward to a
continued effort in 1985."
The awards were established in
1983 by Reynolds as a part of a com-
panvwide effort to strengthen man
ager and employee emphasis on
quality products and services
