No school lunch is com-
plete without dessert, and
sometimes the tried and true
recipes from Grandma’s file
don’t satisfy the need for
something different.
Cupcakes, cookies and oth-
er desserts which can be
eaten out of hand are pre-
ferable for younger students,
who may find it diffi-
cult to manage soft desserts.
Here are two recipes to try
at some point during the
school yea^for special school
lunch treats:
Cookie Crunches
1-1/4 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon double-acting
baking powder.
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon.
1/2 cup shortening.
1/4 cup firmly packed
brown sugar.
1/2 cup honey
1 <*Rg
1 cup candy-coated puffed
wheat.
1/3 cup seedless raisins (or
1/3 cup chopped nuts).
Sift flour; measure; adds
baking powder, salt and cin-
namon and sift again Cream
shortening; add sugar and
honey; cream together until
light and fluffy Add egg and
beat well; then add flour and
mix thoroughly Fold in
puffed wheat and raisins (or
nuts). Drop by teaspoonfuls
onto greased bn king sheet
about two inches apart. Dec-
orate with candied cherries
and nuts if desired Bake in
preheated gas oven set at
375 degrees F., 10 to 12 min-
utes, or until done. Maries
about three dozen cookies.
