Shrimpers...
Cont’d from P-6
Veal Processors with their
freeters full of last year's
shrimp are being forced to aell
their shrimp at last year’s high
prices or to take a loss. Many
processors who have their
inventory tied up cannot afford
to pay top price for this year's
shrimp haul
Should Go Down
Veal said that most Mississ-
ippi processors by September
will have sold most of last
year's inventory and the price
should start to go down.
Consumers will start buying
more and shrimpers will be able
to get higher prices for their
haul, he said
Concerning the resolution on
obtaining state and federal
assistance to aid the troubled
industry, Nungesser said he
didn't think the shrimpers
would get it "The ultimate
solution is a rise of about 20
cents a pound for shrimp." he
said
Nungesser was not in favor of
placing duties on foreign
shrimp because, he said, U S.
shrimpers, even at peak season,
can provide only 40 per cent of
the country’s demand for
shrimp
During the afternoon session,
shrimpers elected eight repre-
sentatives from the coastal
parishes to carry their resolu-
tions to the Murine and
Fisheries Committee hearing
Aug 10 in New Orleans
Treen said the hearing was
originally set up to discuss the
200 mile extension of the U S
coastal boundaries, hut that the
hearing would be opened up to
other matters concerning the
seafood industry
The shrimpers also resolved
to ask the state to appropriate
more funds for research on
shrimping, to seek u sales lax
exemption on shrimping vessels
and some supplies and protest
on any dumping of industrial
waste in Gulf waters
Roy Barrios of Lafourche,
president of the Louisiana Crab
Fishermen's Association asked
for and received the shrimpers’
endorsement and support for
Ins group He said the crab
fishermen had many of the
same problems of the
shrimpers _
because its hind legs don’t move
as they should
Taylor said (he dog is living in
an old car and that he is worried
because the dog is very big and
not inclined to being friendly
although he does feed it
He asks that the owner of the
dog call 758-3551 and claim him
Taylor said he had called the
sheriff’s department and was
told he could dispose of the dog
if no one claims him which
Taylor does not want to do
