I would like to take this opportunity to acquaint the
voters of Aransas Pass as to my views regarding
our schools.
My Quolifications:
I believe that school board members
should be college-educated I hove a B S
degree from the University of Texas, plus
a course in Administrative Education from
Texas A & I
I believe parents of school-age children
ore the ones who are most concerned
obout the quality of education I hove 3
children enrolled in our schools
Since ot least holt of our school child-
ren are girls and the majority of teachers
am women, I feel that our sex needs to be
represented on the school board
I have been associated with our schools
as parent, P T. A officer, and teacher
for the past ten years Having been on
the "inside," I feel that I am acquainted
with their problems and know more about
their operation than can be observed from the outside

MRS. J. M. ATTAWAY JR.
:
The stotement I mode when announcing my candidacy in regard to
upgrading the quality of instruction in our schools in no way was a
reflection upon the obility of the many excellent teachers in our school
system However, we hove a large yearly turnover in our faculty A
school board is o policy-making organization, and until our policies
toward teachers ore strengthened, our school system cannot compete
fovorably with other schools when filling teacher vacancies. I would
advocate the following policies as far as teachers are concerned:
—Competing with schools of similar size in the area salary-wise.
—Encouraging, if not requiring, refresher courses periodically.
—Encouraging work toword advanced degrees, The STATE pays
the increase in salary resulting from these degrees.
_Set up tenure for teachers, whereby they may have security in
their jobs after they have proved themselves to be qualified. They
should be able to make suggestions obout the operation of our
school system without fear of losing their jobs.
_Provision of adequote-up-to-date instructional material.
_Freedom from too many housekeeping duties that could be per-
formed adequately by others.
Pamphlet materiel given out during Public School Wook ot our schools
givo statistics that prove these importsnt considerations
Parents, let's be ceocemed net oaly with buildings, but with whet
fafcoe place inside these buildings!
