Swine Flu Shots To Begin
Monday At County Clinics
The PROGRESS—Aransas Pass, Texas
PAGE THREE — WEDNESDAY. SEPT. 29. 1979
\
The San Patricio County
Health Department has been
advised that they will receive a
small supply of the monovalent
swine flu vaccine by Friday,
October 1st.
Dr. A.F. Tasch, county health
officer, has scheduled vaccina-
tions to begin Monday, Oct. 4, at
the three health department
clinics.
The swine flu immunizations
will be given two days a week at
each clinic, and the schedule is
set up as follows:
San Patricio County Health
Department, Sinton: 8a.m. till 5
pm., Tuesdays and Fridays.
Mathis Health Unit: 8 a.m.till
5 p.m. Mondays and Thursday.
Ingleside Branch Clinic,
County Health Department: 8
a.m. till 5 p.m., Mondays and
Thursdays.
The monovalent type vaccine
can be given to adults from age
18 to 65. Those over 65 should
receive the bivalent flu vaccine
which the health department
hopes to receive “in a week or
so.”
Besides giving the vaccina-
tions at the three county health
units, the department will give
a very small amount of the
vaccine to doctors in the county
who request it.
Private physicians will then
have available a small amount
of the vaccine to give their
patients who request it.
The U.S. government is
spending some $135 million on
the swine flu vaccination pro-
gram in an effort to avert an
epidemic of the illness this
winter.
During the Asian flu outbreak
in 1957-58, more than 70,000
people died from the illness in
the United States. The Hong
Kong flu epidemic in 1968-69
took an estimated 30,000 lives.
Dr. Theodore Cooper, assis-
tant HEW secretary, has said
that the swine flu vaccinations
should protect about 85 per cent
of those who take the shots and
that the other 15 per cent
should, in the event they
contract the illness, have
milder cases than they would
otherwise.
Cooper has stated there is no
chance that anyone will get the
flu from taking the shots
because the vaccine is made
from a killed virus. The only
side effects are the possibility of
a sore arm and perhaps a slight
fever.
In a government experiment
on 6,000 volunteers who re-
ceived the flu shots, only 1.8 per
cent developed a fever which
lasted about 24 hours or less.
Health officials urge that
everyone over 18 take the shots.
They are still experimenting to
determine dosages for those
under 18 years of age.
The only exceptions are those
who are allergic to eggs. It is
emphasized that anyone with an
egg allergy should not take the
vaccine.

HERE’S TO YOUR HEALTH
from
BEAU HYDRICK, R. PH.
The usual cause of swollen ankles is excess
body fluid which seeps out into the loose
spaces beneath the skin. It can also occur
to the hands and face. Your body can hold
onto water only by retaining salt. Reduce
the use of salt in cooking or flavoring, and
you will likely reduce water retention and
the swelling it causes. Obesity can be
caused by water retention due to excessive,
salt consumption.

WORKMEN ARE BUSY cleaning, painting and renovating the small tanker which caused
lots of local commotion last week when it was towed up the channel to Conn Brown Harbor.
Eddie Gilden of Aransas Marine Ways said the 185-foot tanker is the largest vessel ever
hauled out by his company. After the renovation is completed, the tanker will be used to
transport molasses from Honduras.
