A Baker’s Dozen.
Of coarse everybody knows that
thirteen isa baker’s dozen. But do
you know why ? There is an inte-
resting legend of the Hudson that
offers an explanation. Jan Peter-
son van Amsterdam kept a bake-
shop in Albany. He invented New
Year’s cakes and made gingerbread
babies in the likeness ol his own
lat offspring. His one great iear
was that of witches, and he some-
times drank an extra glass of spir-
its in order to escape them. On
the last night of 1654, as he was
seated at bis fire dreaming of the
money he would make when the
orders came in for his cakes, he
was startled by a sharp rap and an
ugly old woman entered.
’’ Give me a dozen New Year’s
cookies ! ’ ’ she cried.
“Veil, den, you needn’t shpeak
so loued. I ain’t teal, den.’’
“A dozen ! ” she screamed with
all her might. “Give me a dozen!
Here are only twfclve !”
“Veil, den, twelf is a dozen.”
“One more; I want a dozen.”
“Veil, den, if you wantanodder
go to de duyvil and ged it.” The
hag left the shop, and from that
time on it seemed that poor John
was bewitched indeed. His cakes
were stolen. His bread was so
light that it went up the chimney,
when it was not so heavy that it
fell through the oven. His wife
went deaf and his trade left him
rapidly.
At last the poor baker called on
St. Nicholas to come and aid him.
Even as he asked the patron of
Dutch feasts stood before him. He
told the baker that his troubles had
come upon him because he was
stingy and advised him to be more
generous. Then the saint vanished
and the old woman appeared in-
stead.
“ Give me that other cake,” she
said.
The baker complied, and the old
woman exclaimed.
“ The spell is broken. From
this time a dozen is thirteen.”
Taking from the counter a gin-
gerbread effigy of St. Nicholas, she
made the astonished Dutchman lay
his hand upon it and swear to give
more liberal measure in the future.
