Twenty-two students par-
ticipated in College Station at
a T1PA competition. The
group garnered six medals in
the live competition and
received 49 medals from
SUflC and T1PA white in
attendance at the conference
"Its been a good year its not
the most successful We've had
stronger years; this hasn't bees
our best year although year-
book probably equated the beat
year at tea at TIM said Dr.
CharBe Marfer chair of the
department of Journalism and
Noncommunication.
At the T1PA conference the
1996 Prickly Pear won sweep-
stakes; the book Is currently
competing for a Pacemaker
awwd from the ACP.
Marler who is also the
adviser for the Optimist
pointed out one aspect of
the contests that is not easi-
ly recognized.
"The Prickly Pear staff
should have peaked because
they had seniors and gradu-
ate students. The Optimist I
didn't expect to peak
because we have sopho-
mores and juniors.
Broadcasting had a mixture
of seniors and underclass-
men; they did good" he

Bible Bowl to challenge
students of all ages
ly Stephanie Garricen
Student Reporter
They're coming to put truth to
the test They're from places near
and far - from Abilene to Okla-
homa City to Durango CO.
They've come to test themselves
not just intellectually but also
spiritually. On Saturday morning
at 8 a.m. students of all ages will
gather in Moody Coliseum to
begin an event known as the
Bible Bowl.
Students participating have pre-
pared for months literally spend-
ing hundreds of hours studying for
the bowl said Don Williams
director of the Bible BowL
This year students will begin
by taking six tests all covering
material from the book of 2
Samuel. The test is not easy and
the average college student would
fall said Williams.
Amazingly a participating stu-
dent might be as young as a
fourth grader or as old as an adult
past college age.
Each person is judged and
awarded individually as well as
with their team which consists
of four members. Over 100 a-
wards will be given this year.
But according to Kay Williams

and teaches in the musk depart-
ment many of the students aren't
just going for awards.
Williams said their main moti-
vation b to learn Gods word bet-
ter and really absorb what they've
learned. She said the test was fun
for many students and also an ex-
cellent educational opportunity
"They leam more in the Bible
Bowl setting than in any Sunday
school classes' said Williams.
Kay Williams daughter Beth
Williams freshman undecided
major from Abilene participated
in the bowl from seventh to
twelfth grade. She said she grew
to enjoy the competition more
and more each year as she learned
new information and made some
of her best friends.
But the main reason Williams
participated went beyond intel-
lectual and social pursuits.
"You cant preach the word or
spread the gospel if you don't
know what5 in it" said Williams.
She said the competition had a
positive influence on her life; she
recommended it to anyone.
This Saturday the tradition
continues as students travel from
near and far to Join in ACUs
Bible Bowl. All students are in-
vited to attend.
