Christmas Lighting Winners
The Christina* home lighting
winners were announced Tuesday
norning, Dec. 23, by barren
^Heintschel member of the Let
Grange Jaycee committee who
selected the winners.
Five winners were named,
each receiving $5.00. Mr. Heint-
schel stated that there were nu-
merous other entries which re-
ceived honorable mention and
other homes which were beauti-
fully decorated that did not en-
ter the contest.
Here are the winners and a
description of their decorations:
Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Jacob:
Santa Claus is sitting in a rock-
ing chair in the front yard soak-
ing his feet id a pan of water. His
hoots and bag of toys are placed
beside the chair. There is also a
lighted tree and the front door
is outlined with pine and deco-
rated with a huge poinsetta and
.the words “Merry Christmas".

light tree is placed on the front
of the chimney at the front of the
house. Reindeer running along
the lawn behind sv*ut

a green flocked tgee decorated
with clusters of gold balls can be
seen through the living room
window. The front door is dec-
orated with a large gold key and
a spotlight is placed on the rein-
deer in the shrubbery to make
the scene complete.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Kalkis:
Santa who with his sleigh and
reindeer has parked bn the roof,
is going in the chimney. The py-
rncantha trees in the yard are
lit up with red lights to give this
home a Christmas glow.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Voelkel:
A little sleigh aha reindeer on
the car port roof outlined
blue lights and the front porch
lined with red light* gfves this
home . real yuletlde look. A
lighted bell is placed on the front
door and there are two _
candles placed on either side of
the step.

There will be a face missing
from Journal square this Christ-
mas and in the Christmases to
come which always had a smile
and friendly greeting for every-
one. That is the face of Mrs. Meta
Harigel, a friend who was very
dear to the folks at the Journal
and I’m sure to many others too.
We have a memory though, of
someone who contributed a lot
to La Grange and to the Journal
and we’re vfery grateful that we
had a chance to know sonqeone
as sweet and fine as Mrs. Harl-

face of F. F. Eoopmann at the
courthouse tigs other day. He is
relieving A. C. Hatch the pre-
sent janitor, who along with Mrs.
Hatch are visiting in San Fran-
jtsco, California with their dau-
ghter and family.

Joe Hart is still limping down
the street with a stiff knee he re-
ceived from an encounte^i with a
donkey he was riding while on a
• deer hunt. If Joe is still limping,
I-wonder how the mule is fair-
ing????

Jackie Jenson who is attending
Howard Paine College in Brown-
wood will be home for the holi-
days with his parents, Rev. and
Mrs. J. S. Jensen. Also visiting
in the Jensen home will be their
daughter, Mrs. Shirley Zant and
children Donna Jean and David
of Luting. We know they’ll have
a happy Xmas.

Fayette's Second
Polio Case
Reported for ’58
Thomas Beale, 26-year-old
Flatonia youth is currently a pat-
ient at Southwestern Respiratory
Center in Houston where he is
being treated for poliomyelitis.
Beal is Fayette county’s second
polio case of the year, according
to Miss Clara Roitsch, chairman
of the Fayette county chapter of
the National Foundation. The
other case was that of Chad Pen-
r.ingtdn of Schulenburg. Pen-
nington was only inactive for 2
months.
Mr. Beale is the son of Mrs.
Margaret Beale of near Flatonia
and is reported to .have paralysis
in his left leg ands*wp4. reports
Is in an iron lung. He tfecame ill
on Dec. 11 and was taken to the
Shiner hospital and the next day

Claims One Life

ond is Second Christmas Day.
Thursday, Jan. 1 will also be
a holiday. La Grange business
houses will be closed on these

Memorial Hospital, of multiple
injuries which she received in an
automobile accident earlier that
day.
The accident- occured at ap-
proximately 12 noon at the inter-
section of E. Guadalupe and
North Jackson Streets when the
car in which Mrs. Hackebeil was
a passenger was ip collision with
a 1954 Ford driven by Mrs. Wal-
ter Kalmus of La Grange and
accupied by her husband. V. R.
Hackebeil, son of the ill-fated
woman was driving the other
car and was traveling east on
Guadalupe. The Kalmus car was
going north on Jackson.
V. R. was treated for a broken
left arm and thumb. Neither of
the Kalmuses were hurt.
A. H. Knippel, police chief, in-
vestigated and reports that the

which had clipped off a fire plug
at the corner of the yard of Mrs.
Sam Lowrey. Those first to Teach
the scene worked frantically to
remove Mrs. Hackebeil who was
partly pinned under the car, to
prevent her from being drowned
by the water gushing out of the
broken hydrant.
Mrs. Hackebeil sustained a
crushed right chest, punctured
lung, multiple fractures of the
right arm and leg, fractured skull
pnd severe shock. She never fully
regained consciousnes.
Funeral services were held for
Mrs. Hackebeil Monday at 2 p.
m. at the Koenig Funeral chapel
with burial in the Rutersville ce
metery. Rev. Raymond W. Durst
officiated.
The deceased was a daughter
of Arno and Alma Ellers Lieb-
scher and was born at Ruters-
ville on Jan. 17, 1915. She mar-
ried Vastine Hackebeil at War-
renton Dec. 17, 1935. Mr. Hacke-
beil died Dec. 31, 1956 also as
the result of injuries received in
an auto accident.
Mrs. Hackebeil was a regular
carrier for a Houston paper and
was also employed as charwoman
for the Carter Courts here for the
past year and a half. Her son as-
sisted her in both of these jobs.
Survivors include her parents
of Round Top; her son; four sis-
ters, Mrs. Eugene Phillips and
Mrs Woodvllle Felscher and Miss
Alice Liebscher all of Houston
i.nd Mrs. Bennie Felscher of
Brenham; and two brothers
Lloyd and Weldon Liebecher,
both of Houston.

Mrs. Harigel became seriously
ill early Friday night and died
shortly alt&r being taken to the
hospital.
Born on June 21 1878, in
Weimar the deceased was the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. F.
Rose. She married Benno F. Ha-
rigel in Weimar on April 10,
1900. They made their homd in
La Grange. Mr. Harigel passed a-
way June 6, 1951. He was con-
nected with the La Grange Jour-
nal for 60 years. Eight years as
apprentice printer and then as
editor-publisher.
Surviving are one *°n> Ben F.
of Deatsville, Ala.; a sister, Miss
Vena Rose of Weimar; two
grandchildren and one great-
grandchild.

Sets Improvements
For Fayette Co.
The Texas Highway Depart-
ment will spend 8212,400.00 for
improvements op highways in
Fayette County during 1959, M.
G Cornelius, District Engineer
at Yoakum, Texas, has announc-
ed. This is in addition to the re-
gular construction and mainten-
ance program.
The State Highway Commis-
sion, at its December meeting,
approved this appropriation to
improve already existing high-
ways. This money will be spent
for widening, additional surfac-
ing, seal coat, and bridge con-
struction.
The projects in Fayette
will be under the
the local Highway District
sonnel.
“We should have this program
moving by spring”. District En-
gineer Cornelius said. “We be-,
lieve that the money spent in this
county will go a long way toward

Alfred Heintze
Injured In Auto
Accident Sat.
Alfred Heintze is a patient in
Fayette Memorial Hospital as the
result of injuries he suffered
when he was Involved in an. auto
accident here Saturday, Dec. 20
at about 12:30 P- m.
Mr. Hetntte was driving his
1958 Ford east on Fannin when
it was in collision with a 1958
Plymouth, ojterated by Leonard
Lidiak, which was treaveling
north on Jefferson (Highway
77). Mr. Heintze was knocked
unconsicious and was taken to
Fayette Memorial Hospital where
he was treated for a badly cut
right ear, neck bruises and
shock. Lidiak, employee of the
La Grange State bank was un-
hurt, ' ^
Deputy Sheriff C. A. Prilop
and Constable Vastine Koopmann
investigated and report that both
vehicles were extensively dam-
aged.
