A scientific note: La Grange
Makes Effort to Launch Own
Rocket. So you’re saying when
did this happen? Where was I? I
didn’t hear anything about this.
Well not too many people heard
about it unless they were in the
vicinity of the Lester Hotel last
Wednesday night and then it
really wasn’t a rocket and nobo-
dy lntentially'tried to launch it.
Anyway our ad solicitor, Mrs.
Victoria Weeren, (better known
as “Dumpty”) and her husband
were on their way to eat supper
at the Bon Ton Cafe. Seems as if
some youngster who bought fire-
works for Christmas lost a tor-
pedo in front of the hotel and
Dumpty happened to step on it
and the thing went off.
Well, .Dumpty left the ground
all right, but we still haven’t
found out just how high. She’s
back to earth though, still a lit-
tle jumpy, and might add, a lit-
tle more careful about what she
steps on.

BARON is 8A8TR0P
First Friend of "The Father of Texas”
Every Texss school child knows the
inspiring story of Moses and Stephen
F. Austin, but few remember that these
two champions of freedom had a friend
whose wisdom, skill and diplomacy
made their great colonization project
possible. This first friend of the Austins
was Felipe Enrique Neri, Baron de
Bastrop. Historians disagree as to who
he was .. Prussian soldier of fortune,
exiled FrenCh nobleman, American ad-
venturer or the Dutch Baron he said
he was .. but, as a Spanish colonizer in
Louisiana and Texas, from 1793 until
his death in 1827, the Baron de Bastrop
was a man of influence and importance.
In December of 1820, Moaes Austin had
despaired of obtaining the Spanish Gov-
ernor's approval of his plan to establish
an Anglo-American colony in Texas.
Through the intervention of the Baron,
the Governor reconsidered. After Moaes
Austin’s death, failure again confronted
his son, Stephen 7. Austin. But again
the advice and active assistance of
de Bastrop cleared the way. Stephen F.
Austin was able to prove the quality
of his leadership and to become the
"Father of Texas." Throughout a life
of public service the Baron de Bastrop
chan\pioned the rights of the settlers
who were to build a great republic and
a great state.
Today Texans still demand and get
their right to choose the way they want
to live. In this vigorous and freedom-
minded homeland .. "Beer Belongs"
and this is why the United States Brew-
ers Foundation works constantly, in
conjunction with, brewers, wholesalers
and retailers, to assure the sale of beer
and ale under pleasant, orderly condi- ,
tiom. Believing that strict law enforce-
ment serves the best interest of Texans,
the Foundation stresses close co-opera-
tion with the Armed Forces, law en-
forcement and governing officials in la
