VIENNA.—The Vienna music sea-
son began with a sensation; a new
musical instrument or rather music
without an instrument was intro-
duced to the critical audience of the
Vienna Concsrthouse at a recent
performance.
The success of the “Spherophone"
of the French PrOfes.sor Maurice
matenot was tremendous, the music
plucked from the air by his hand
won an unprecedentedly unanomous
praise.
The Spherophone is an improved,
instrument of the type, which was
first presented about a year ago at
the Frankfort Music Exposition. It
looks like a middle-sized radio re-
ceiving set, and. it is , indeed, very
similarly constructed. *
Its principal parts are vacuurt
tubes. Which produce the tones, if
alternating currents of varying fre-
quencies are conducted over tliemi,
and movable wire rolls, which con-
trol the frequency and thus the
height of the tones, produced In
the tubes.
The intensity of the tones is
regulated with the strength of the
current between (he , spherophone
and a load speaker, which belongs
to the apparatus.
