In 1967 he and his wife moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where he served as District Superintendent of the United Methodist Church and as pastor of First United Methodist Church and St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Albuquerque. Thigpen also served on the McMurry University Board of Trustees.
