Description: The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Shelby Johnson. Johnson dropped out of school to join the Army, and was sent to Fort Knox in early 1941. Forgoing any basic training, he went to the Philippines aboard the SS President Coolidge (1931) and joined the 17th Ordnance Company at Bataan. Following the surrender of US forces, he endured the Bataan Death March, and describes the horrors he witnessed. Soon after arrival at Camp O’Donnell he was selected for burial detail.… more
