Born in Maribel, Wisconsin 15 March 1916, Van de Hey attended a one room school for eight years before graduating from high school in Antigo, Wisconsin. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps for two years before joining the Army Air Corps in 1936. Upon entering the Air Corps, he went to Chanute Field, Illinois for aircraft and maintenance school.
