Johansen joined the Navy in December 1942. and was assigned to the 62nd Construction Battalion. After training in Rhode Island and California, he shipped out in late 1943 to Pearl Harbor and went to work expanding the submarine base. His unit next participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima.
