Travis joined the Marine Corps in 1942 and received basic training at Parris Island and further training at Camp Lejeune. Description: The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Ray Essig. Essig joined the Army in 1943. He received basic training at Camp Hahn and advanced training in the Mojave Desert. He was pulled out of the Army Specialized Training Program early in 1944 and assigned to the 42nd Infantry Division.
