THE GETTY CENTER FOR EDUCATION IN THE ARTS
1981 In anticipation of the disbursement of the J. Paul Getty estate.
Explorations were undertaken to determine where the trust would devote
its resources in the visual arts fields.
The guiding principles of the investigation were:
1. A commitment to excellence
2. The expectation that activities would make a significant
contribution
3. The idea of a charitable institution which will spend more on
the visual arts than any other single organization in the
world
1982 The Getty estate was finally settled. The stewardship of the endowment
and the development of its programs became the responsibility of the J.
Paul Getty Trust.
Trust Trustees made commitments to four major activities:
1. Another Museum
2. A Center for History of Art and Humanities
3. A Conservation Institution
4. A Center for Education in the Arts
The Center for education in the arts is a locus for coordinating
activities in other places and drawing widely on the expertise of
consultants and experienced practitioners.
1983 The Center has four initial programs underway:
1. A national research project of promising visual art education
programs
2. A school personnel development project
3. Experimentation and application of media technologies to arts
education.
4. A museum education demonstration program
The first Getty Institute for Educators on the visual Arts is held in
Los Angeles in the summer of this year.
1984 The Center for Education in the Arts initiates programs which are
concerned with research and development activities.
1985 The case studies and cross-site analysis of seven school districts is
reported in Bevond Creating: The Place for the Arts in America's
Schools. The report advocates discipline-based art education in the
schools.
1986 The Getty center sends out a call for proposals for Regional Institute
planning grants.
Dr. Jack Davis and Dr. William McCarter make a proposal to the Getty
Center for a planning grant after securing commitments to participate
in a Regional Institute from North Texas Area art administrators,
teachers, museums and centers.
1987 The Davis/McCarter proposal is accepted by the Center for Education in
the Arts. Work on the Grant begins in the North Texas Area.
