Notes

Man O' War, also known as "Big Red", was born in 1917 and enjoyed a racing career right after the end of World War I. By the end of his racing career in 1921, he had won 20 of 21 races, $249,465 in purses, set numerous racing and world records including winning the Belmont Stakes by 20 lengths which would hold for over 50 years until 1973 when Secretariat won by 31 lengths, won the first race filmed in its entirety, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest racehorses of all time. After racing he was retired to stud, where he went on to sire War Admiral [4th Triple Crown Winner; 1937] and Seabiscuit. Man O' War retired in 1943 and died on November 1, 1947, at the age of 30, as the best American racehorse of the 20th century as voted by ESPN and Sports Illustrated.
