To those who have not yet read Peace, Love and Healing, by Bernie Siegel, I can't shout its praises loudly
enough. You remember Bernie: the guy from New Haven, Connecticut who was a medical doctor but doesn't
practice anymore, and who has devoted himself to writing inspirational books and articles and to traveling around
the world giving lectures and workshops and seminars? The guy who was blasted by several New York publications
for being a charlatan? The guy who, during his workshops, has terminally ill people do things like hold hands, sing,
and color pictures? The guy who wrote the bestselling Love, Medicine and Miracles? That's the guy.
To give you some idea of what Dr. Siegel is about, I quote an excerpt from his dedication page in
which he recounts a statement made by a Dr. Karl Menninger in his book, Man Against Himself (1938):
"To those who would use intelligence in the battle against death --- to strengthen the will to live against
the wish to die, and to replace with love the blind compulsion to give hostages to hatred as the price of
living." Siegel, as you can hopefully infer, is still concerned with the body -
-- but now he understands its relationship to the spirit and the mind too.
R o n 's Siegel, to my knowledge, does not claim to be able to heal anyone
with songs and crayons. He's not a wizard. He's interested in teaching
those with terminal illnesses how to let the disease heal their lives.
O o m He knows that the body (and therefore, the immune system) is dependent
upon a healthy psyche, and it is this he wishes to heal. He says, among
other things, that love Is physiologic, and that its power over the body
must not be Ignored.
The reason why I find Siegel's writing so inspirational, is that I discovered by myself, before I read
about him, how important this type of healing is. It's not as If he advocates turning our backs on the
medical profession, but he says we should get back in touch with these forms of self-healing that have
been Ignored by it.
What I often tell people is: We are not dying from HIV/AIDS. We are living with it. If we can
Just rechannel ourselves into this mode of thinking, it's amazing the changes it will make. It can change
our outlook from an absolute negative to a brighter one, and this, I've found, is the only way to be happy.
Things just happen in life. We rarely have any control. Peggy Railey is a vegetable, in a coma for the rest
of her life because her demonic husband tried to kill her, people are born deaf, blind, retarded, and with
various defects everyday. At least we can take a walk, paint a picture, go to the theatre, read a good book,
and other things. We have an illness, but we are free. So while you're worrying about dying, take a
minute and realize that you are very much alive at this moment, and realize too, that you could be
spending this moment in a much more productive way.
Check out Bernie Siegel's book too.
Best of health -
