Understanding your blood work could save your life! Anyone with HIV
knows the term "blood work" quite well. However, there are many who do not
afford as much importance to blood work as they should. Having blood work
done on a regular basis
is the first line of
defense with HIV. Your blood work serves as a roadmap to your
Indicators such as the health and your progress in dealing with HIV.
T4-T8 ratio, total T4
count, p.24, and beta-2
can serve as early warning signs and as markers in the use of treatment
therapies.
How often should someone who is HIV positive have their blood work
done? That depends on several factors such as personal choice, therapies
currently in use, and results from previous blood work. Most would
R Agree that monthly blood work may be a bit extreme due to such factors
Ron S as finances (including whether or not you have insurance). But as a
RO general practice many have blood work done on a three month basis,
R OOm especially when practicing an alternate protocol. It is a general rule of thumb
that a period of ninety days gives a therapy adequate time in the system to
determine whether it is beneficial to you or not.
If possible, blood work should always be considered prior to adding or
deleting a certain therapy from one's personal protocol. In this way it is easier to
determine the effectiveness of something you are either using or about to use.
Your blood work serves as a road map to your health and your progress
in dealing with HIV. Recent observations made at DBC point to the fact that
changes in p.24 and beta-2 do not always indicate disease progression, especially
when the count is good. When p.24 goes positive and the beta-2 goes beyond 3.0
there is a very strong indication that you may be dealing with an OI
(opportunistic infection), and you should be on the lookout for one.
Remember, your blood work does not lie. Understanding it is the secret to
using it to your advantage.Ron Woodroof
