As of December 31, 1991, 206,392 people
have reported HIV infection in the US alone. Of
those, 133,232 have died. In a period ending in
August of 1989, 100,000 cases of AIDS had been
reported in the US. Apparently it took just over
two years (from September 1989 to November
1991) to double that figure.
In a recent article, The Wall Street Journal
documents a study conducted at the Centers for
Disease Control. Their research shows that more
heterosexuals are contracting the disease. "7%
of the second 100,000 cases were attributed to
heterosexual transmission, a 44% increase from
the first 100,000. While women accounted for
9% of the first 100,000 cases, they accounted for
12% of the second 100,000.
"Homosexual or bisexual men still
comprise the greatest percentage of cases: 61%
in the first 100,000, and 55% in the second
100,000."AZT Watch
J.D. Hamilton, et al, at the Department of
Veterans Health Affairs Medical Centers in
Baltimore, have just completed a study with
zidovudine (AZI). The New England Journal of
Medicine reports that "In symptomatic patients
with HIV infection, early treatment with (AZI)
delays progression to AIDS, but in this controlled
study it did not improve survival, and it was
associated with more side effects."For Girls Only
The FDA is now conducting studies with
the new condom for women. Developed by a
Danish gynecologist researching fertility
problems, the condom is about seven inches long
and has flexible rings on either end. The inner
ring fits behind the pubic bone, and the outer
remains outside the body.
According to Mary Ann Leeper of the
Wisconsin Pharmaceutical Co., the company that
would manufacture the product under the name
Reality if it were approved, "75% of women
surveyed were happy with the condom."Melanins
Anecdotal reports in AIDS Treatment
News (John S. James, Issue # 144, Feb. 7, 1992;
p.5) show varied physiological response to
soluble malanins as a treatment for HIV. ATN
has received new responses from five different
users of melanins, and all of them report
negative results.
There are several theories for melanin's
prior inconsistencies: some believe that it works
best in people with HIV-related illness but no
opportunistic infection, some that it has poor
gastric absorption qualities. Others believe that
melanin is a promising treatment, but that in
certain circumstances it is manufactured
incorrectly. Whatever the case, the particular
responses in ATN show the use of melanins to be
futile.The Maitake Mushroom
NEWSource has just begun a research
initiative on the Maitake mushroom of Japan.
The in vitro anti-HIV activity of the mushroom
was discovered by Japanese researchers who had
used the substance previously for high blood
pressure, cancer, and cholesterol levels.
We will pass on more information as we
receive it.4
