to remove Hampton

of the Texas Constitution last
used in 1954, lawyers acting at
the request of the Dallas Gay Al-
liance filed a petition Thursday
asking the state Supreme Court
to order state District Judge Jack
Hampton's immediate removal
from office.
State District Judge Ron Chap-
man, who received the sworn pe-
tition and administered legal'
oaths in Dallas to the 13 lawyers
who have signed it so far, said he
will forward the petition on Mon-
day to the high court.
The court is required by law to
consider the matter before allothers on its
docket.
Hampton,
already the
subject of an
investigation
by the state Hampton
Commission
on Judicial Conduct, provoked
national outrage in December
when he told the Times Herald
he rejected a life sentence for
Richard Lee Bednarski, 19, in
part because he believed the two
men Bednarski murdered were
"queers cruising the streets pick-
ing up teenage boys" and, there-
fore, were "asking for trouble."
