but we needed a few hours work with
the dictionary. The head librarian
was a friend of mine and I talked her
about taking it home with us one
night. We would stay together so
both of us could use it, take it just
before school was out and have it
back before school began the next
morning. We reasoned it would help
the entire class. We would be through
with it and it would be free for the
other students.
Even though we knew it was not
to be taken from the school, we could
see what a good thing this was going
to be. What we couldn’t see was that
it was going to be a stormy night.
Why should that be a problem? We
had to cross Duncan Creek on the
road out to school, and the creek was
from hill to hill the next morning.
The Spanish dictionary was out of

Rosa Lopez, a Comanche
County Sheriff s Deputy gave a very
informative program on Law En-

We were amazed at the duties a
deputy has to perform in a county the
size of Comanche. Miles traveled,
dangers incurred, and rewards of
helping others were all a part of a
deputy’s daily life.
We all agreed that women are
needed in Law Enforcement and Rosa

are all like that now. The occasion
for my being there was to find infor-
mation for a program I’m preparing
for the Daughters of the American
.. Revolution on a Great American.
I had seen the Librarian, Jean
Jackson, and asked if I could come to
the High School library to search for
the information I needed. She as-
sured me I would be welcome and I
took advantage of that recently. Jean
showed me the set of encyclopedias
she thought would be the best for
what I wanted. I took the correct
volume to a table and sat down to
work.
Before beginning, I had to look
around the spacious library. There is
an island in the center for computers
and students were coming and going
constantly, almost exclusively to
those computers. It was a far cry
from the library of my high school
days winch was staffed by student
vohmteen. of which I was one.
The encyclopedia work done, I
turned toanofeer book Jean had found
for me onGreat Americans. The one
I wanted was included and I took it to
her to ask far a copy of two pages.

had used her computer to get four or in Big Sandy, Mrs Martens got acall
