Notes

Digitized as part of a History Harvest project. The photograph was donated by Regina Richards.

James V. Allred was born in Bowie, Texas in 1899. He served as Attorney General of Texas from 1931-1935. He was elected as the Democratic Governor of Texas in 1935, serving until 1939. He was selected by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to serve as Judge of U.S. District Court for Southern District of Texas from 1939-1942. President Harry Truman would also select Allred to serve in the same position from 1949-1959. He died in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1959. The James V. Allred state prison in Wichita Falls, Texas is named after the federal judge.
