from Austin Nevada to-night gives
tlio particulars of a horrible tragedy in
Smoky valley Nevada. It appears
that Chris. Peickstein had been for a
long time jealous of his wife In conse-
quence of attentions to her by a young
man named Norton and they had fre-
quent quarrels about him. Yesterday
a man named Osterhans went to
Reicksteiu's house and receiving no re-
sponse to his demands for admission
broke open the door. On the floor lay
the naked body of Mrs. lteicksteiu
cut in to pieces and her head split
open. At her feet were the bodies of
their two little girls their heads nearly
served from their bodies anil near by
were the dead bodies of Peickstein and
young Norton grappled as in a death
struggle-. Peickstein grasped tight In
his right hand a large bowle knife cov-
ered with blood; ami in Norton's hands
was a dragoon pistol two chambers of
which were discharged. There is no
living witness to tlio horrible nflair.

Here is the i full i(i ol a gtvat city
street interrupted for a year because
no engineer can be found utile to make
the calculations for a ''skeni'-iu'cli"
bridge il thing which any glailuiitti of
a well equipped department of engi
neering can no; there'll is a city sub-
jected to enorinoiis loss by the failure
of its water supply system because the
engineer employed made no calcula-
tion for the friction of water in the
pipes in another instance it is a whole
district sickened by nausea because a
hulf-iiiught engineer was interested
Willi the drainage.
Mr. Jtiildwiii Latham In his recent
book on sanitary engineering and Dr.

would save one hundred thousand lives

From pan les just from Sherman we
have gathered the following particu-
lars iifu brutal murder at Staples' gro-
cery six miles west of that city.
Monday forenoon two men named
riwpeetivcly Parker anil Cochran got
ml a spree and after getting pretty
well under the Influence of liquor
picked a quarrel Willi a Mr. Staples
proprietor of Hie grocery. Jt appears
an old grudge gave rise to tliu diili-
culty; at any rate an attack was made
upon Maine.-' an old mini ami was
knocked down beaten most shameful-
ly mid finally shot by one of tlio two
men killing him almost instantly.
The murderers fled ns soon ns the mur-
der was committed.
Sheritl Ynden was untitled of the
homicide which occurred about lioou
and at once started in pursuit of the
guilty parties accompanied by a Mr.
Pall. The murdiv is said to have been
unprovoked.
It is certainly to be hope that these
desperate men may be brought to jus-
tice. Murders are getting to be of al-
most weekly occurrence in northern
Texas and something must lie done to
rid tlio country of such dangerous
diameters.

The state vs. Robert Thomas. The
detendeiit was Jointly indicted with J.
C. Van Home Morris Kecder und
Daniel Harvey for putting concentra-
ted lye into the boiler of engine No.
212 of the Little Milium Division of the
I'iltshurg Cincinnati and St. Louis
Hailway company on tlio 2(ith of De-
cember lust with intent lo injure the
engine. The otleiisc was committed
at the time of the general strike of the
locomotive engineers and firemen on
that division of the Pittsburg Cincin-
nati and St. Louis road. The defciid-
ent on arrign incut pleaded not guilty.
Yesterday afternoon the (ilea of not
guilty was withdrawn and a plea of
guilty entered the amount of damage
having been reduced from liii as al-
leged in the indictment to$34iii order
to lower the degree of crime to less
than u penitentiary offense.
Some testimony was taken on behalf
ot tne prisoner to snow nis tornier
good character. It appears from the
testimony that he was the ranking
fireman and next in order for promo-
tion ns engineer.
On the part- of the prosecution Mr.
Setchell the master mechanic of the
division was examined. He stated
that tlie effect of putting concentrated
lye on the boiler was to destroy the lu-
I ricating qualities of the oil. It was
necessary that the valve and cylinders
should be lubricatad and for that rea-
son it was customary to use from two
to three quarts of oil in running a dis-
tance of 120 miles. The oil being la-
cu up by the lye it caused the valves
to work hard. The same result might
be prod tided by the engines foaming
whether from the lye snap or other
cause. The result of soaping the en-
gine would be that tlio valves working
hard would produce a bending of dif-
ferent parts of the machinery. Tlio
rocker arm of the engine was bent
and the fibers of the iron so destroyed
that it had to be thrown away. The
witness gave the prisoner an excellent
character and said that he had told his
foreman that he (the prisoner) was
considered as first in the line of pro-
motion. The prisoner was the only
support of an aged and invalid moth-
er. The court passing the sentence re-
marked that the prisoner had borne a
good character prior to the commission
of this oltense but that for some rea-
son be bad lent himself to a combina-
tion of bad men not bad In that they
declined further to work for that was
the right of every man but bad in that
they went further to destroy the ma-
chinery of the railroad company ; and
even further than that to imperil the
lives of passengers upon the trains.
Though the oltense committed was
light it was done maliciously with the
intent to injure and while considera-
tions of his character and his relations
to his mother could not be lost upon
the court and while it a as as painful
to the court to pronounce judgment of
tlie law as it was to those to whom he
was dear to have it pronounced yet
punishnieuts were for example; and it
would be doing little for the law to
pass his offense with a slight sentence.
The prisoner was sent to tlie work-
house for thirty days and ordered to
pay the costs of prosecution.
At tlie request of the prisoner's coun-
sel the witnesses refrained from claim-
ing their fees thereby reducing the
costs to a few dollurs. ...
