HELLCAT NEWS
April 1999
I, cannot travel to every meeting. Thus I ask that all oui members
who are within short reach of one of these Chapter meetings, try to
be our contact, and then maybe pass a note for inclusion here. I
have promised to attend the Smoky Mountain meeting and certainly
our National, but others I need help.
Perhaps here is a good place to thank the many 23rd members
who have provided family input as I had suggested. I am adding this
to my computer file. In the process, it registered in my slow brain,
that what I really want is for you to be sure your child, buddy, or
caretaker knows I want them to contact me with important status
info. And as aid to that end, my e-mail is jmfeezel@AOL.com.
Make this point with your closest!
Also just opened a letter from Paul Lozden, wherein he reports:
Results of extensive testing procedures are great, still awaiting bone
scan but the good word - no C. Sounded like bad news on the way
home - caught in snow and ice storm - 10 hrs for 117 miles, Eugene
to Medford. His next paragraph reported being approached in the
market with a question, "were you a Hellcat?" The gentleman said
he had been a member of the 17th AIB, was not aware of our
Association. Paul intends to share more from our News magazine
and refers him to Bill Funke. For now, in case, he is Abraham
(Curly) Seskin. Bring him in, Paul!
Also news from our Past President, Ted Blostein, who is again
chairing the Perpetuity Committee. His subject: listing all ex-
POWs. He asked for my input, but would want to have any help
you may have.
Andy Woods: I am in receipt of your article and picture of one of
our true heroes - Pete Vickless. I look forward to inclusion 'space
available.'
Lastly, to any member whose 1999 dues are not in: you will be
lucky if you see this one! Re-up! And God's blessings to all.

This April issue is the 54th anniversary of two events that will
always remain in our memories - the liberation of the concentration
camp near Landsberg, and the capture of the bridge at Dillingen
over the Danube River.
The concentration camp was a horrible site, which those of us
who at least saw the pictures taken in the camp, will never let the
world forget. Some people have tried to gloss over the happenings
in these camps, but we know the truth about what happened and
should not be reluctant to say so.
The capture of the bridge stands out in my mind, as I met a
buddy from Indianapolis, Frank Zendell, just after he had come

back across the bridge. Frank was in the first squad to cross the
bridge on the 22nd of April, 1945. Frank was in the 66th AIB.
Many of you remember the sign, "You are crossing the beautiful
blue Danube thru courtesy of the 12th Armored Div." This sign is
no longer at that location and the bridge has been rebuilt. As the
attached photo shows, a monument has been erected on the site by
the local Germans. The plaque at the bottom reads, "Only this
bridge was not destroyed between Ulm and Passau. This way our
town and our land was saved from destruction. Ammo Domini 22-
4-45." The translation was done by our next door neighbor, who
also translated the following information about the bridge from a
sign found near the current bridge.
The photo of the bridge is the current bridge built at the same
location as the one we captured. This bridge was opened in June
1985. It replaced the bridge built in 1924. The current bridge is very
similar to the one that was there in 1945. The 1924 bridge had
replaced a wooden bridge built in 1815-18 that had served traffic
over the Donau for over 100 years. These pictures were taken on
our trip to France and Germany in May 1998. The camp at Lands-
berg was not on the agenda, but I do not think there is anything
there for tourists at this time.
We have received two new memberships in the last month.
Harold Herdich [DIV HQ] living in Chicago, and John Wassell
[DIV MP] living in Ft. Wayne, IN. Welcome aboard, hope to see
you in KY this fall. Please get in touch with me at the address or
phone number shown above.
Mail and/or calls have been very few and far between this month.
We did receive a call from Ed and Corinne Strianese which,
according to Corinne, was trivial. In my opinion, no communication
from one of our Hellcat friends is trivial. We hope the instructions
were clear enough to play the game you inquired about. We also
hope your health problems have greatly improved and your doctors'
reports are as encouraging as mine have been.
Ted Blostein writes requesting a list of any POWs from Div. Hq.
units. This is to supplement the ACU web site which Ted feels may
not be complete. No names were found from our units on the web
site. Ted is asking us to send any from our units that we know
about. The only one that I have been able to locate was listed in the
12th AD History, Vol 2, published by Turner. The only name listed
is Arthur Avery [CCA], Please let Ted or me know of any others
from your units.
Our only visit this month was from Mark, Ann, and Patty Ault
and Norbert Bruemmer [all 43rd], We were discussing possible
locations for the 2001 reunion. That is assuming we won't all
disappear from the face of the earth when the Millennium occurs!
It was great to have an opportunity to visit with these Hellcats and
Hellkittens.
It's no joke, calls and letters have been few and far between.
PLEASE give me a break and let me hear from you!! Do not forget
KY in October, Ted's POW request, life membership, and search
for some more Hellcats.
