he lias given out the coutract for the buil-

The Senate is discussing a bill to refund
the one per cent school tax. That's right.
By this means the Republicans who have
paid their tax, will get their money back
and the Democrats, who have not, will be
taxed to make up the deficiency cause'd
thereby in the treasury. There are wise
men in the Senate surely, who seem not to
realize that iu order to return taxes, they
have to levy the very amount they return.
But then, it is not school taxes that are
levied, you know ! Obnoxious schools.
In spite of your teeth,
Both, above and beneath,
Being lightly enamel'd and thin,
They will ever break down,

An advertisement of a medicina, how-
ever candid and conscientious it rnisy be,
docs not always carry conviction with it.
The public know to their sorrow that the
boastful ciaims put forth in behalf of many
go-called remedies are literally "a delusion
and a snare.'' Probably t'je best use,
therefore, tiiat can be made of the space
devoted to this notice of Hostetter's Sto-
mach Bitters is to invito those who read
it to inquire ot the parties that have test-
ed the curative and preventive properties
of the article, what tliey think of it. We
earnstly requst all doubters to ascertain
from sach of their friends and neighbors
as have taken this standard tonic and
alterative as a protection against malari-
ous diseases, or as a cure for indigestion,
liver complaint, constipation, rheumatism
nervous debility, headache, low spirits,
languor, biliousness, &c., what Hostetter's
Bitters has done for them. There is no
testimony so trustworthy as that which is
the result ot personal experience
Carlyle's Advice (o tli«< .linn
Who Dreams.
Apparently you are a young man of
usual, perhaps of extreme, sensibility, and
placed at present iu the unfortunate posi-
tion of having nothing to do. Vague
revery, chaotic meditation, the Iriiitluss
effort to sound the unfathomable, is tliw
natural result fur you. Such a form of
charactcr indicates the probability of su-
perior capabilitieu to work in this world ;
but it is also, uuleBS guided toward work,
the inevitable prophecy of much suffering,
disappointment and failure in your course
of life. Understand always that the end
of a man is an action, not a thought. Eu-
deavor incessantly, with all the strength
that is in yon, to ascertain what—there
where you are, there as yon are—you can
do in this world; and upon that bend
your whole faculties, regarding all reve
ries, feelings, singular thoughts, moods
etc., as worth nothing whatever, except
as they bear on that, and will help toward
that. Your thoughts, moods, etc, will
thus, in part, legitimate themselves, and
become fruitful possessions for you ; in
part fall away as illegitimate, and die out
of the way ; and your goal will become
clearer to you, every step you courageous-
ly advance toward it. No man ever un-
derstood this universe; cach man may
understand what good and manful work
it lies with him to accomplish there.
Cheer up! there's gear to win you never
saw ! So says the old Scotch song, and I
can say no more to you.
