LOCAL AFFAIRS.
This lieing all fools day, we warn every
body to look out for fools.
For all the styles of spring ami summer
hats go to PANCOAST & SON. 14-3 <ltf
We acknowledge the receipt of a pamph-
let entitled "The Fifth Texas State Fair,"
which fair will be he'd on the State fair
grounds in the city of Houston, commenc-
ing Tuesday. May 19th, 1874, and continue
four days.
Gentlkmen's furn'ghing goods of the
very best quality always to be found at
PANCOAST & SON. 14-3-dtf
Thk anticipated heavy rain has come
down Monday night, a cool day with the
usual norther following. As this day wag
the last of March, we hope the clearing
process going on will be such as to pro-
vide us for a time with sunny days and
southerly winds, which the farmer is now
looking for.
PANCOAST & SON have now received a
full assortment of cloths, cassimeres and
linens to make up to order. 14 3 dtt
A petition is circulating praying tlio
County Court to withdraw the appeal in
the railroad bond case. This is a singular
proceeding, to say the least of it. Peti-
tioning a eourt to stop the execution of
its sworn duty is an entirely moderu in-
vention and can only have originated in
the brain of a modern railroad lawyer.
Suppose we petition Mr. Peitce to make
an eud with our troubles and put in his
bond just these few words, "that this con-
tract was binding upon him from the date the
result of the election was recorded"—wouldn't
that settle all difficulties and touch the
County Judges with emotion ? It is such
a trifling tor Mr. Peirce to come down
with those few lines, and it is so annoying
to run around and solicit subscriptions.
Ready made clothing in style and make
rot to be surpassed, just received by PAN-
COAST & SON. i4-3-itf

A Board of Survey, to consist of Captain
G. B. Russel, 9th Infantry, Captain J. VV.
Frouch, 25th Infantry, and First Lieuten-
ant J. A. Angur, 5th Cavalry, will con-
vene at the subsistence storehouse, iti this
city, on Monday, the 30th instant, at ten
o'clock a. m., or as soon thereafter as prac-
ticable, to examine into, report upon, and
tlx the responsibility for a deficiency in,
and quality of, certain articles of subsis-
tence stores, alleged to exist, for which
First Lieutenant A. M. Raphall, 11th In-
fantry, Aeting Commissary of Subsistence,
is accountable.

Napoleon the Fourth's young head is
remarkably level, or the Empress Eugenie
and M. Rouher are playing his cards well
for him. His offer to leave the re-estab-
lishment of the Empire to a plebiscitum
puts Chauibord, with his claims based on
the "Divine right," out of the way for
' good and all. If there is a plebiscite, it is
safe to predict that the result will be
whatever President MacMahon desires it
to be. They maunge those things very
well iu France, and the machinery of the
Department of the Interior being once set
iu motion with all its prefects, sub-pre-
fects, councillors, mayors and judges of
the peace to grind out ballots for or a-
gainst, as the case may be, there is no
doubt as to the result. And what Presi
dent MacMahou's sentiments are maybe
inferred from the significant fa!t that the
orders recently transmitted to officers and
public functionaries forbidding theci to
attend the Chiselhurst celebration, spoke
of Eugenie and her son as the "Empress"
and the "Prince Imperial," not as the
"ex-Empress" and "ex-Prince Imperial."
