[From the New York Exprees.]
Thirty years ago a rooui-inate of
the writer died ot this disease. He I
was renowned maker of rifles. His ;
weakness was the dog; he would;
would pick up lancy canines with-j
out masters—had ten to twenty j
ownerless animals in his kennel. In j
sportive moments, we said: "Brun-
ker, you will yet die of dogs—mad
dogs!" lie laughed. One Sunday
afternoon, in his rambles, he picked
up a stray little "King Charles
spaniel,'' in Lockport, New York.
The. dog bit hiui in the wrist; ho
threw him down in disgust, and
thought no more ot the incident.
After the lapse of six. weeks, be
complained that the right wrist
tailed him. Soon after lie had re
pugnance to water, but could drink
cider. Next day he could not drink
eider, but craved vinegar. On Sun-
day eveuining he came to the hotel
and said to the waiter: "I am go-
iug mad!" The waiter, laughing,
said to him : "Brunker, I will give
you a glass of water; take it—drink
it." And when I placed the glass
of water in bis hand an involuntary
spasm came over him, and the con*
tents went into the fire. Then I
knew he was mad, and became very
nervous, and called upou others to
assist to take care of this man.
While the writer was absent lie
went to his room and tore the bed
clothes in all shapes. A window
was above the door. Stepping upon
the shoulders of an assistant, and
opening the window, we shouted to
Bruuker: "Here I am ; what is the
matter with youl" Meantime the
door was held firmly at the outside.
Soon Bruuker regained his com-
posure, and told us to enter the
room, as the lit was oft and all dan-
ger over. Stalwart men beside ns
wavered; but we entered. We
went to a drawer and took a sash
or face muffler, and pinioned bis
arms with it, as he requested. Soon
another and another spasm succeed-
ed. He said the voluntary muscles
had become involuntary ; and it he
did injury he could not avoid it.
This lasted twenty-tour hours, dur.
ing which poor Bruuker had lucid
iuterv-als and knew his forlorn con-
dition ; but the rational moments,
between spasms, became less and
less till he died.
This was the most developed case
of hydrophobia the writer ever
witnessed. Since then he has two
dogs mad, but chained. Pouring
water from one dish into another to
witness the eftects, in all respects
they exhibited the same repug-
nance to water as did friend Brun-
ker—a shudder followed by a
spasm ! Yet it is now asserted that
this rabies in dogs creates no anti'
pathy to water. And this is so as-
serted in London journals. It may
be so, but experience is to the cont-
rary.
It seems now to be conceded that,
while men in this disease abhor
water, dogs with hydrophobia court
it and drink it. The two dogs the
writer saw in the midst of their
madness would rave when water
was poured from one dish into an-
other. Ought not science to settle
this mooted point 1
"I'm sorry to interrupt your enjoy- !
ment of tlie sonata, but you've sat
upon the hat through two move-
ments, and as the last two are very
long and quite exciting, the hat
might suiter from your appreciation
of the music."
There is a superstitious idea in
some quarters that there is a Na-
tional Democratic party in exist
enee Will some one wto has faith
in this idea please state for the
public information where the lead-
era of the party may be found, aud
what newspapers may be looked to
as the exponents of the true Demo-
cratic doctrine 1 We should like to
know, for instance* what views
the Democratic party has on fin-
ance, tariff, railroad legislation, etc.,
etc.

The Pope liad his Joke nbout a
Dend Cardinal.
[Rome Correspondence N; Y. Times ]
By the death of Cardinal Tarquini, the
past week, one of the dozen porporati cre-
ated at the last consistory, the present
Pope lias lived to bury more than 100
members of the Sacred College, who have
died since lie entered upon his reigu. Car-
dinal Barnabo, created 15 years of age,
and now 7:1 years old, is ill of the gout,
and is not expected to hold out much lon-
ger. This Cardinal is now entirely blind.
Cardinal Antonelli, who bus also suffered
with the gout, is now much better, but
begins to feel the weight of years, as he
has nearly readied the ag» of 70. The
Papal Senate is a circle of old gentlemen,
as about half have passed the age of 65
years. The Cardinal D« Angelis is of the
same nge as the Pope, and holds the title
of Archbishop of Fermo, iu which town he
passes the greater part' of the year. Pius
IX is as much disposed to joke as was Pre -
sident Linooki, aud a story is told of one
of his sallies Of good humor tlie past week:
'The death of Cardinal Tarquini so coon
after he whs created," said the Pope, "is a
proof that the Roniaus will have nothing
more to do with the Tivrquius; and here
is Cardinal De Angelis, who is most of the
time in Fermo (infirmo) and holds out to
the last." The Cardinals standing by, as
they wero bound to do, laughed at the
Pope's l"vely liumor, which be will fre-
quently indulge, no matter who is hit.
Pius IX is in good health, and on the 13th
of the coming May lie will have completed
his 81st year, for he was born in 1792. His
long reign as Pontiff is frequently spoken
of as something remarkable, and by some
is accounted nothing less than as a sign of
the special providence of God. But if the
Pope lives 10 years longer, we shall find
nothing iu the fact except what is perfect
ly ia the order of nature. If most of the
other members of the Mastai-Farretti fam
ily live to tlie age of 1)0, there is no reason
why this brother Giovanni, with his regu-
lar mode of living, should not have allot
ted to liiin an equal number ot years.

What IVIiglit Have Been.
[From the Troy Times ]
Some of his early anti-slavery
friends were shocked to learn some
years ago that Mr. Sumner gave
Sunday dinner parties and was a
moderate user of wine, hut he was
moved by their criticisms. His
habits he was not ashamed of, and
be was certainly conscientious in
his conduct; but those who sup
posed him to be a Puritan or a very
abstemious, self-denying person
were mistaken. He was always
temperate, but enjoyed good living.
If General Grant and himself
could only have started out pleas
antly together, there were many
points of contact which would have
been mutually agreeable. Sumner
I knew was a fine scholar, and
General Grant has no tastes in that
direction; but silent as the Presi-
dent usually is, he is very sociable
in his way, and ot all things likes
to see a few pleasant friends around
his dinner table. Mr. Sumner was
like him in this respect, and in an-
other—they both were fond of a
generous table.
"Will you kindly rise, sir, and
allow me to take my hat from under
you f" said oue gentleman to an-
other at a recent Boston concert.
