Notes

Note from Bascom Giles in lower-left corner: "The land of Texas is a storied land. Six flags have flown over it, including its own flag of the evening star, half-forgotten except by men and women who love a land for what it was as well as for what it can be. There have been many maps of Texas, some sketched in European capitals as France, England and Spain juggled the land of the Tejas back and forth in their game of world empire. Most of the earlier ones were inaccurate. Most of those drawn since our borders have been explored and charted emphasize only the routes of transportation. To the General Land Office have come many men and women seeking a map such as this, one which is accurate in its locations and its boundaries, one which is ageless and undated, one which suggests the land's story and yet leaves the opportunity for further embellishment. I have considered the compilation and careful disposition of this map both a duty and a responsibility. Those of us who have labored with it are proud of this contribution to the history and understanding of Texas. I hope you enjoy it, and that you find it useful. Bascom Giles, Commissioner of the General Land Office."
