Do minor executives
Answer: That mainly depends 1
upon how sure thoy are that they I
can go oh holding down their own
jobs. For a person with a "sense
of insecurity" will usually have so
strong n craving for moral support
that he'll surround himself with peo-
ple who will tell him how good ha
is and .possibly without realizing it
will bo unfair to a subordinate
who dares to question his decisions.
But the fellow who is suro of him-
self (and he's generally headed to-
ward promotion) will be glad to be
told when ho's wrong if U is 'dono
politely.
Is tho urge to write neurotic?
Answer: Yes when it is over-
whelmingly strong assorts Dr. Ed-
mund Bcrgler in the Psychoanalytic
Review. Except in the case of peo-
ple who write mainly for a living
tho urgo to "creative writing" es-
pecially fiction is a way in which
the writer manages to case the ten-
sion of his own neurotic conflicts

I KEEPING HEALTHY
Residual Goiter Symptoms
By Or
Jamoi
A FEW years ago I was cxamln-
Ing a heavyweight wrestler and
noted the changed expression on his
face particularly the bulging eyes.
I immediately thought a goiter
was present; yet when I took his
heart rate it was normal. I told
him that I thought he had a goiter
but that as his heart rate was nor-
mal I was mistaken. He laughed
and stated that he had had a goiter
but had undergono an operation the
previous year and seemed to have
lost his nervousness and rapid heart
beat. His eyes bulged less but
were still too prominent.
While most goiter symptoms
disappear after removal of the
thyroid gland there are some
cases in which tho symptoms
persist much to Uie disappoint-
ment of patient and surgeon.
Patients who- have undergone an
operation for removal of tho thy-
roid gland to rid themselves of
nervousness rapid heart beat
HEALTH
When there is not enough julee
manufactured by the thyroid gland
or the pituitary gland excess fat
will accumulate But it can easily
bo seen how a worried or frustrated
person may sit with a box of candies

to eat to make up for his frustration.

children?
bad for
Answer: On tho contrary some
make-believe is necessary for a
child's emotional development and
whether encouraged by their ciders
or not children always indulge in
some degree o'f ."pretending." A
child forced to face the fact that he
is powerless to make his wishes
come true and forbidden to console
himself by gratifying them in his
imagination would bo overwhelmed
with terror and frustration. But as
any child is given a chanco to taste
the thrill of actually doing things
for himself his interest in make-
believe fades.

sweating and bulging eyes often
retain some or all of these symp-
toms which are therefore called
residual symptoms. Just what
causes these symptoms to remain
never has been definitely proved.
In studying 33 patients (in whom
tho action of the thyroid gland ap-
parently was normal) at Intervals
ranging from two and a half to ten
years after the removal of the gland
by surgical operation it was found
that 31 retained symptoms even
after all this time. Tho bulging eyes
were tho only true sign or symptom
that could be directly attributed to
thyroid disturbance.
What then was the cause of the
.other residual symptoms?
The other symptoms nervous-
ness rapid heart rate sweating
wero attributed to other fnctors
present in the make-up of (he pa-
tient to the emotional effect of the
disease and operation or to other
causes aside from thyroid disease
and emotional disturbances.
NOTES
The main cause of hardening of
the arteries (loss of elastic tissue in
tho walls of the blood vessels) is
believed to bo infection teeth ton-
sils gums sinuses gall bladder or
large intestlno An infection poisons
the blood which is carried by tho
blood vessels to verjous parts of tho
body. This poison Inflames tho lin-
ing of the blood vessels which af-
fects tho elastic coat.

Trail of The Cross
Lesson for April 3 1019
rpHE TURNING-POINT in Jesus'
career was dramatic. But tho
few friends who were present did
not then realize what it meant. On
n vacation Journey
Jesus put to his most
Intimate friends this
question: "Who do
men Bay that I am?"
Peter's answer
"Thou art tho
Christ" may sound
obvious to us but
was not obvious then.
It was sensational
so much so that Jesus
did not want the pub
Dr. Foreman
licity that would como to him if that
namo "Christ" wero freely circu-
lated. For the word "Christ" meant
nothing less than "King." To tho
Romans it would sound like treason;
but to the Jews it would sound like
Judgment Day.
When Peter said "You are
tho Christ" ho was Implying
also: "You aro Immortal. You
are the coming conqueror of the
world. You are not In tho samo
class with any otlicr man. You
will do for mankind what no
other hero has over done."
God's View nnd tho Devil's
QN ALL THAT glowing devotion
Jesus' next announcement fell
Ilka icy rain. In the cars of thoso
friends of his it sounded like tho
boll of death. Never before had
Jesu3 told them anything like this
and they must have found it hard to
bclive. For he had not a word
about a throne nothing about suc-
cess nothing about mastering tho
world. Quito the contrary. He must
"suffer many things . . . be .rejected
... bo killed." If they heard tho
words "rise again" too the words
made no impression.
For Jesus had announced what to
them seemed impossible absurd:
He tho Christ would be killed I
Small wonder that Peter broke out-
No Not But Jesus would not com
promise. He even called Peter
"Satan" for thinking as ho did.
Tho Christian church agrees
with Jesus not with Peter. Wo
realize today as Peter himself
did afterwards what Uie Cross
of Christ means.
Buddha founder of a very differ-
ent rqllglon died in old age of over-
eating. Can you imagine Jesus do-
ing that? Suppose Jesus had taken
Peter's advice and made arrange-
ments to retire comfortably where
he would never see a cross? Then
we never should have heard of him.
He Would not have been worth hear-
ing froni.
Ono Cross is Not Enough
yES WE KNOW now that tho
Cross of Christ is important.
But we are a good deal like Peter
after all. For we do not listen to
what we do not like to hear. And
the next words of Jesus on that his-
toric occasion must have sounded
then as thoy do now mo3t chilling
of all. "Whosoever would come
after me lot him take his own cross
and follow me." In Jesus' time
no one was ever seen carrying a
cross who was not already under
sentence of death and on his way to
be executed.
Translated into modern terms
what Jesus said would sound as
horrible as this: Any man who
wishes to follow me must tako
his scat on the electric chair
. . . must tako his place In tho
lethal chamber . . . must put his
neck in a nooso . . . and follow
me.
Ono cross is not enough. There
must boother crosses. My road is
a death-march. I want for my fol-
lowers only those who are willing
to take the same trail.
Trail of tho Cross
SUCH WORDS sounded harsh then;
they do still. But in tho light
of the centuries we can see what
Jesus meant better than that little
band of frichtencd men nround Jn.
sus who did not want to hear tho
words "suffer . . . die." Jesus was
not advocating pain for pain's sake.
Why did Jesus set his own
face toward tho cross? Tho
Christian answer Is He did It
for others. Now what is wrong
with the world today? .It isn't
that wo don't wish Tiur neigh-
bors well; but the trouble is we
don't want to be bothered our
good-will Is too tender to stand
any strain wo will do anything
for other people provided It
doesn't hurt.
But the world can be saved only
as men and women imitate and
multiply the spirit of the crucified
Christ.
