U.S. Attorney-General John Mitchell today charged
that the Democratic-controlled Congress has -- as he
put it -- "substantially hamstrung" President Nixon's
fight against crime.
Addressing the Republican Governor's Conference in
Hot Springs, Arkansas,
Mitchell said Congress has not yet passed one of
20 anti-crime bills proposed by Nixon. He also said
crime is much more serious than most Americans
realize, and it cannot exist without some corruption
among public officials.
Pennsylvania Governor Raymond Shafer was unanimouslyelected new Chairman of the conference.
