CRYSTAL CITY
LIVE:HIX Voting has been relatively heavy today as
residents of Crystal City go to the polls in a
School Board election that one candidate has called a
test between the establishment and young Mexican-
Americans.
Among the three Mexican-Americans who make up one
slate
of candidates is 25-year-old Jose Gutierrez,
a leader of the militant Mexican-American Youth
Organization.
The roots of the bitterly fought campaign go back
to a 1963 election, when Mexican-Americans took
over the City Council for the first time in history.
More fuel was added late last year by !a boycott of schools by Mexcican-American students.
