General Dynamics is pinning its imediate hopes for the future
on a new strategic bomber for the Air Force -- the B-1.
Specifications laid out by the Strategic Air Command are as
stringent as those were for the F-111, which General Dynamics is now
producing.
Some of the design featur es require the new bomber to
have an inter continental range of more than 5,000 miles without refueling..
air to ground missles to blast its way thru enemy defenses...air to air
missles....haul its Hydrogen bomb load internally and be able to
dash along at tree-top levels, following the terrain.
The Pentagon is expected to announce the contract award in
May. Three major contractors, General Dynamics, Boeing, and North American
Rockwell Corporation are bidding for the contract.
The new plane will be smaller than the B-52 and larger than
the bomber version of the F-111 and would fly at a speed more than 2%
times the speed of sound. The plane is expected to be flying as early as 1977.
