More controversy today over allegations that
the FBI has been tapping the telephones of some
members of Congress.
A federal judge in Baltimore has released documents
which show that an FBI informer recorded conversations
with
Texas Democratic Representative John Dowdy, who has
been indicted for allegedly accepting a $25,000 bribe,
and dAh on charges of commiting perjury five times
before a grand jury.
The judge pointed out that the papers DO NOT show
that Dowdy's telephones were tapped...only the tphones
of the FBI informer...with his knowledge and consent.
Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield says --even
so -- the FBIts role in the case was not a proper
use of its investigative powers, and he would favor
a Congressional probe of FBI surveillance activities.V
