BLOXON LIVEA Texas Ranger shot and killed a man
considered mentally retarded in the mistaken
belief the victim was being sought for today's
killing of a Pittsburg constable.
The first death occurred about midnight
when constable Dan Tubbs went to investigate
a man with a gun blocking a road in the north~.
east Texas town, Tubbs was felled by a shotgun blast.
Then, a bevy of law officers converged on the
area in the pre-dawn hours in a search for Tubbst
assailant. Ranger R.t4. Arnold said he came upon
49-year-old Walker Curtis, described as a harmless
man who often wore a toy cap gun and holster.
Arnold said Curtis pointed a gun at him from
behind a mailbox and ignored an order to drop the
weapon in the darkhess, a warning shot.
