At heart, she considers herself a newspaperwoman but Katie Sherrod also has a twenty-year
background in broadcast journalism. Not knowing anything about producing a television
broadcast, she joined the KERA news team with Boy Ray Sanders as the host. There she learned
how to tell stories in a different way. Learning how to tell stories visually then became another
passion of Sherrod. In 2006, she helped produce and report a documentary entitled, "Voices of
Witness Africa." This documentary gave a voice to lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgendered
Episcopal and Anglicans of Africa. Traveling to Uganda, Kenya, and South Africa, Sherrod faced
military operatives and put herself in danger multiple times to give gay people in Africa a voice.
She continues to do video work as an independent videographer for various clients and for the
Episcopal Church.
Sherrod is an award-winning journalist in both print and broadcast media. Some of her most
prominent awards include Best Newspaper Column, Best Interview/Talk Show from the Dallas
Press Club, and the Exceptional Media Merit Award from the National Women's Political
Caucus. Her feature writing and investigative reporting won Sherrod the Associated Press
Managing Editors Award, and the Texas Headliners Award respectively. Additionally, she was
inducted into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame in 1987 for outstanding contributions in the field
of communications, named one of Fort Worth's Outstanding Women in 1988 and held the title of
Texas Woman of the Year in 1989.
Early on in her career, she learned that everyone has a story. "There is no boring human being,"
as she puts it, and she reminds aspiring journalists of these words: "If you're curious about
