FILM BENEFIT
PRESENTED
by Dave Lewis
On Thursday, June 23rd, the Inwood
Theater will present an 8 P.M. benefit
showing of the film Lianna for the Alli-
ance. This film, written and directed
by the film-maker John Sayles, tells of
Lianna's relationships with the people
in her life--husband, children, lover,
best friend--as she discovers and ex-
plores her lesbianism.
Lianna is not a sophisticated, poli-
tical woman. She is a housewife and a
mother of two who has managed to reach
her thirites without discovering her--U

The most publicized event will be the
Parade down Cedar Springs at 4pm on Sun-
day, June 19th, followed by the Rally at
Lee Park. The Grand Marshalls of the
Parade, Miriam Beth Shalom and Dan Brad-
ley, will speak. Be sure and wear your
DGA T-shirt or a Gay Pride '83 T-shirt
which the Alliance has printed especially
for this year.
Special DGA events during Gay Pride
Week include the Toast and Roast dinner
at Cracker's Restaurant at 2621 McKinney
Ave. The cash bar opens at 7:15 pm with
dinner served at 8:00 pm. Because space
is limited, the $14.50 tickets should be
purchased in advance at the Crossroads
Market.
Don't miss Lianna at the Inwood, the
AIDS Seminar at the O.P., and all the
other Gay Pride '83 activities!P 0 Box 140504

for this are many, some Lianna's fault
and some society's. But these reasons
are not important. Lianna must cope
with her life and her sexuality. It
is a dilemma that many of us have faced
or are facing.
Lianna finds it easier to deal with
actions than with words. She is happy to
make love to Ruth and to fall in love with
her. But she has trouble identifying her-
self as a gay woman or a lesbian. Lianna
is unsure if her feelings are only for
Ruth or for women in general. Ruth is
also not without doubts. She is afraid
that Lianna is using her to explore a
fascination with women.
Lianna has been playing across the coun-
try including a recent run in Houston)
to positive reactions from both critics
and audiences. Some non-gay audiences
have felt uncomfortable with the explicit
sex but have liked the film anyway.
If John Sayles' name sounds familiar to
you, perhaps you saw his very successful
film Return of the Secaucus Seven when it
played Dallas over a year ago.
Tickets for the benefit screening cost
$6 and are available in advance at the

BAND SEEKS
TO UNIFY
Judith Atwood, President of the Oak
Lawn Symphonic Band of Dallas is asking
all the presidents of the various gay and
lesbian organizations of the Greater Dal-
las area to call her to discuss "A Year
of Working Together." "Music unites,"
commented Atwood at a special meeting of
the Band board of directors. "It's time
the motorcycle clubs, the business groups,
even the various church organizations
come together. Please call me now be-
cause YOU'RE INVITED to a special event
--courtesy of the Band. Call 351-6697.
"Finally, Gay Pride Week and the Parade
are three weeks away. If your group has
members who play musical instruments,
urge them to call 351-6697 or come to
next Tuesday's rehearsal at 6:45 P.M. at
the Metropolitan Community Church of
Dallas, 2701 Reagan."
The Oak Lawn Symphonic Band has been
asked by the Gay Pride Week Committee
to play at its First Annual Musicale.
Plus they will march in the Gay Pride
Week Parade and play at Razzle Dazzle
Dallas. The following week, the Band
goes to Houston for their Gay Pride
Week events.
NEW PAC CHAIR
The Steering Committee of the DGPC has
elected Tom Barker its chair. The com-
mittee (also known as the Civic Affairs
Department) is now holding regular meet-
ings on the first and third Tuesdays of
each month at 7:30 P.M. The purpose of
the meetings are to maintain the politi-
cal action committee (PAC) as an effec-
tive force with which to deal with poli-
tical issues that effect the gay commun-
ity. PAC is mounting a continuous year-
round commitment that will currently con-
centrate on voter registration and iden-
tification. It will also be directly
concerned with the upcoming special ses-
sion of the Texas State Legislature.
The gay community is, as always, under
attack from political and social foes.
The PAC functions to protect our commun-
ity through political activism and to
educate the community in terms of politi-
cal issues. To accomplish our goals, we
need your help. It is not enough to
hope that things get better; we must work
for them and work hard. We need your
time and money. Furthermore, we need
your input. We cannot effectively and
adequately represent the community with-
out being fully aware of its needs. Let
us hear from you' Come to our meetings
at the DGA office or contact us at 827-
9766. We need to have your support.DALLAS GAY ALLIANCE
