Dear Daryl,
Some time ago I told you I wanted to come and see you about a request from the Texas
Institute of Letters. That day you asked me what the Texas Institute of Letters was. I'm
enclosing an article written in 1986 from the Texas Handbook, one that will give you an
idea of what we do. I'm also enclosing a program from our 2007 banquet.
The main change in the Texas Handbook report is, instead of awarding $11,000
annually, we now-twenty-one years later-give prizes amounting to approximately
$22,000. The writers who receive them are acknowledged, along with the sponsors of
the award, at our annual banquet. Afterward writers generally record their awards on
their book jackets, something I'm happy to say since I received a T.I.L. prize for one of
my short stories.
I've been a member since 1978, have served on the council, and was president in 2000-
2002. I believe the Texas Institute of Letters is an important part of the literary life of the
state as its mission is to stimulate interest in Texas letters and to recognize distinctive
achievement in the field.
