Noteby Matt Earnest
(Pneumocystis camii pneumonia)
PCP was the infection which first gave a team of California
physicians a clue that something was not up to snuff. This rare
pneumonia was diagnosed in seven homosexual men, and from
there it was learned that their immune systems had been depleted,
and HIV was discovered Now the most common of Ols, PCP is
believed by some to be a fungal infection. Many still hold that PCP
is protozoal. Whatever the case, PCP causes a fever and a
persistent dry cough. DBC members report that Aerosolized
Pentamidine does a great job of combatting PCP for those who
cannot tolerate suffa drugs.Mailbag
Dear "Living Not Like A Queen In Houston",
It shouldn't matter if your mother is your keeper, $70 is
not that much money. Glad you're not pregnant, evicted,
or on food stamps yet. You give 'em hell, honey.
Dear "Positive Mind",
Who needs T cells when you've got an attitude like
yours? There are some things that transcend modern
medicine, and you've found the most important of them-
minimizing stress by taking charge of your health and life
makes all the difference. I hope you're in a position to talk
with other people who are HIV+, because there are many
who could benefit from your shining example.DBC will be closed for the holidays beginning Friday (12/20) at
5:30 PM through Christmas Day. We will reopen on Thursday
(12/26).
Caution: Holiday Depression Ahead!
It is a cruel irony that depression is often
such a prominent part of the holiday season. Family
problems, death, bad memories, and the like can all
contribute to a personal vendetta against this time of
year. Difficult as a situation is or was, it need not
screw up the holidays for you for the rest of your life.
Why should it? Why should you let it?
Whatever your religious slant, this is the time
of year for you to renew your faith--in friends or
family or a higher power or pets or in yourself--and
it's nearly impossible when you're struggling to carry
some kind of seasonal baggage. Of course you
should miss a friend or relative who has died, but it
shouldn't become overwhelming or obsessive.
(Therapy, for all its social implications and ever-
growing cost, can be a wonderful thing.)
Remember that when it comes right down to
it, your life is your own. You ultimately have to
make the choice to be happy. Depression leads
straight downhill. Did you know that 30,000
Americans kill themselves each year? Pretty
staggering. Stay on top of things and don't give in to
depression.
The added stress of HIV-positivity can be a
holiday downer for some as well. If you need to talk
to someone who understands exactly what you're
feeling, run, don't walk, to the phone and call Ron or
Jim at DBC ((214) 826-7455). They're both great
listeners who have gone through many holidays with
HIV, and they could most definitely help to ease the
situation. Nothing helps quite like knowing that
you're not the only one who has had a specific
problem.Attention: ddC+Hypericin Users!
