Letting the parent chooseWho makes a good role model for
a child? Apparently, the Big Brothers
of Greater Los Angeles, a group that
provides adult male companions for
fatherless boys 6 to 12, believes no
bisexual or homosexual does. That's
why, last November, the organization
turned down Richard Stanley's appli-
cation to be a Big Brother. On the
application form, Stanley stated that
he is bisextal. Now, with the help of
the American Civil Liberties Union,
Stanley is suing Big Brothers for
discrimination on the basis of sexual
orientation.
Big Brothers, by categorically
screening out homosexuals and bisex-
uals, says it wants to protect the boys
from any possible sexual proposition-
ing or harassment. There's no fault in
wanting to be as cautious as possible
when it comes to the children in the
program. But the group's prohibition
seems based on a premise that allhomosexual men tend to find young
boys sexually attractive. They don't -
any more than all heterosexual men
are attracted to young girls. Thus, the
Big Brothers' policy could easily and
arbitrarily prevent some good candi-
dates from being even considered.
Stanley's suit does not insist that
Big Brothers accept all homosexual
and bisexual men who apply, only
that sexual orientation alone not be
used to disqualify an applicant. That's
not to say that those responsible
shouldn't be absolutely scrupulous in
assessing a candidate's background,
including the existence of any crimi-
nal records. Certainly, a parent is
entitled to as much relevant informa-
tion as possible on his or her son's Big
Brother, including race, religion and
sexual orientation. But then it should
be up to the parent to decide if the
adult in question would make the best
companion for the child. If you have not subscribed to the ISIS

SIR,-Dr Fuchs and colleagues speculate that homosexuals are
less at risk of AIDS than parenteral drug abusers or haemophiliacs,
by a factor of 4 or so. Their estimates hinge upon the denominators
in the homosexual and drug abuser categories.
We have just reported' the third independent random-probability
assessment ofthe incidence ofhomosexuality in the USA. It appears
likely that about 4% of the US adult male population is bisexual or
homosexual, thus 3-8-4-2 million males, not the 8 million figure
used by Fuchs et al, seems the correct denominator. Similarly, the
number of intravenous drug abusers is widely2 estimated as about
750 000. A revised comparison yields:Group
Homosexuals
Drug abusers
Haemophiliacsplaces.

17 000The difference between homosexuals and drug abusers is too small
to be given any weight, but haemophiliacs appear to have double the
risk of either group so far. Given our denominator correction, it
would appear that over a third of male homosexuals and over one-
third of intravenous drug abusers have been infected with the AIDS
virus.3Cumulative no of
