THE GAVEL RAPS
by Mike Stewart
President of the
Dallas Gay AllianceFor many years the Alliance has adver-
tized its Board of Directors meeting on
the fourth Monday of each month as an
"Open" Board meeting. This is a misno-
mer since all Board meetings are open to
the public, and members are always wel-
come and encouraged to attend the meet-
ings.
The Open Board meeting was planned to
provide a time for committee chairs to
report on activities and exchange infor-
mation with the Board of Directors. Au-
gust 22, 1983 marks the revival of this
practice. Since many committees are be-
ing reorganized under new directors, the
fourth Monday of August will be a good
time for new committee chairs to partici-
pate in the planning of DGA activities.
All members of the Alliance are invited
to attend the August 22nd Board meeting,
meet the committee chairs, and watch your
directors in action.Thank you for expressing confidence in
me at the July meeting. Your support is
very important to me, and I look forward
to this year as President of the most
organized, respected, and successful lo-
cal gay organization in the country. If
you ever have questions, comments, sug-
gestions, .... or criticism, please call
me. The DGA phone number is 528-4233,
and my home number is 522-3552.
Join me at the celebrations planned to
commemorate the 21.06 decision on August
17th and Labor Day Weekend. On August 17,
1982, a federal court judge ruled it's
okay to be gay in Texas (something we've
known for a long time), and that calls
for a Texas-sized celebration!by Bill Nelson
On Tuesday, July 26th, the Dallas Times
Herald reported that the Dallas County
Commissioners' Court had replaced over
one hundred Democrats with area Republi-
cans as election judges. Precincts whose
elections have been traditionally run by
Democratic precinct chairs will now find
a Republican in charge.
This situation merely underscores the
need for Dallas gay Republicans to come
forward and assert themselves within their
party. Our movement needs and can profit
from involvement in many areas, and the
growing strength of the Republican party
is handwriting on the wall for our organ-
ization.DIALOC

HeidiStill another indication of our need to
confront the Republican Party with gay
issues is the Republican National Conven-
tion which will take place next year in
Dallas. The major gay political organiz-
ing force in the area, the DGPC and Alli-
ance members, will play host to gay Re-
publicans from all across the country,
and we need to develop the communication
links to successfully offer our warm hos-
pitality.
The Political Action Committee of the
Dallas Gay Alliance is strictly non-
partisan. In the past, our involvement
has heavily leaned towards the Democratic
Party because those willing to give time
and energy within the movement felt most
comfortable in that party. But our
plans for organization of the gay vote
are non-partisan. Now, more than ever,
we need Republican precinct chairs and
Republican activists within the organ-
ization. If you are interested in con-
tributing to the gay rights movement by
working within the Republican Party,
join the PAC of the Alliance or call me
at 521-8919 for more information.Health
LOCAL AIDS RESEARCHTwo local doctors and the Dallas AIDS
Action Project are adding to research on
the causes of the AIDS syndrome, accord-
ing to an article in the Dallas Morning
News.
Joining the research are Dr. James
Wheeler and Dr. Kevin Murphy. Wheeler is
a hematologist, and Murphy is a professor
of infectious diseases at Southwestern
Medical School in Dallas.
The research involves a matched compari-
son between blood traits of 20 men who
exhibit some early symptoms of AIDS, and
20 other Dallas men who exhibit none of
the symptoms. The News quoted Wheeler as
noting that "this is important research,
but it's merely the first of many tests
to be done looking for a marker, or if
possible, a treatment or cure."
Medical researchers have often noted
that one of the difficulties in detecting
or treating individuals with AIDS lies in
the lack of information about its causes
or early symptoms. Blood research pro-
grams may help to identify the presence
of a virus in the blood which may indi-
cate the later emergence of AIDS.
