ALPINE, Texas - Republican gubernato-
rial nominee Clayton Williams acknowl-
edged Sunday that his weekend comparison
of bad weather to rape was "insensitive" and
improper.
"Although I didn't mean any harm, I real-
ize I was wrong," said Mr. Williams, who has
come under intense criticism for the remark.
In a statement released by his campaign,
the Midland rancher and oilman said: "I had
no intention in my heart to hurt anyone, es-
pecially those women who have been trauma-TEXAS ELECTIONS '90
tized by rape.
"Looking back, I realize it was insensitive
and had no place at the campfire or in any
setting."
The controversy engulfing the Williams
campaign erupted Saturday when bad
weather delayed the start of his spring cattle
roundup here.
