LEADERSHIP LAMBDA
The purpose of Leadership Lambda is to develop
and strengthen leadership skills for existing and
potential new leaders in the lesbian, gay and bi-
sexual community, actively promoting
inclusiveness. To reach these goals for the
community, Leadership Lambda will offer a two-
phase program to facilitate and develop leadership
skills. Initially, a 1 1/2 day conference on June 3 &
4 will offer several plenary sessions and numerous
break-out sessions targeting a variety of topics
related to gay, lesbian and bi-sexual leadership
challenges. Later, a six-month seminar series will
also be offered which will target specific issues
related to continued leadership development.
Topics planned to be covered include: internalized
homophobia, institutionalized racism and sexism,
leadership styles, organizational skills,
communication skills, volunteer management,
community/media relations, organizational
structures, and others. As you can see, these topics
are pertinent to our Statement of Purpose. As such,
I am happy that MACT Dallas was one of the first
organizations to endorse Leadership Lambda.
If you are a paid member and are interested in
attending either the conference and/or the seminar
series (and are willing to make the commitment to
attend all of the sessions) MACT will consider
funding scholarships to cover the $30.00
registration fee. Come to the May business
meeting, Tuesday, May 10 and make your needs
known. We will also have brochures and
registration information at this meeting.

In case you're not from this part of the country, you
may not know what Cinco de Mayo is. For the
record, it is not Mexico's Independence Day. That's
celebrated on September 16. May 5 marks the
victory of a small but dedicated Mexican army over
Napoleon III's highly trained French fighting forces
in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It was a display of
courage and tenacity that gave the Mexicans hope
that they could throw out the French invaders,
which they did several years later.
For Texans, the observance is especially significant
because the leader of the Mexican army, General
Ignacio Zaragoza, was born near what is now
Goliad when Texas still belonged to Mexico.
This year MACT will celebrate Cinco de Mayo on
Friday, May 6. I know that is like celebrating July
4 on July 5, but Friday is a better day for a party.
See the announcement in this newsletter for all of
the details.
