by Rick D. Stubbs
Activities are well under way for the
April 6th elections. The Dallas Gay
Political Caucus (DGPC) faces nEw
challenges and opportunities in these
municipal and county elections, and the
political action committee will be mak-
ing every effort to increase the par-
ticipation and influence of the gay
community in this important process.
As the new Director of the Civic
Affairs Department, 1 am excited about
this challenge and proud to have so many
experienced committee members helping,
plan our many activities. More members
and volunteers are needed for voter re-
gistration, phone bank, mailings, dis-
tribution of leaflets and cards, and for
other special projects.
Candidate questionnaires went out to
all City Council candidates and DISD
School Board Trustee candidates. The
DGPC Steering Committee is holding can-
didate screenings during the month of
February. Unless more screenings are
required, the Steering Committee will
make its recommendations for endorse-
ments based on the written question-
naires and screening sessions on
February 25th.
The Steering Committee's recommenda-
tions will be made to the general mem-
bership at the Candidates' Night on
March 4th at 7:30pm at the Metropolitan
Community Church. This is a specially
scheduled meeting of the DGPC, and can-
didates seeking our endorsement will be
there to address the general membership.
DGPC activities must be funded only by
political contributions, not by any DGA
funds. A special fundraiser is planned
for Sunday, March 10th, at the First
Unitarian Church. We are very pleased
that our featured speaker will be Molly
Ivins, a popular newspaper columnist in
the Dallas Times Herald who also covers
the Texas State Legislature. This
special fundraiser will benefit jointly
the Dallas Gay Political Caucus and the
Lesbian/Gay Rights Advocates.
The last day for registering to vote
in the April 6th elections will be March
7th. Please contact me if you are in-
terested in taking part in our voter
registration drive. Also, we especially
need volunteers for the phone bank. If
you have even one or two hours that you
could spare to help out, please call.
You can make a difference.

OLSB Confers
by Jerome Sims
J. Jacobs was re-elected Presi-
dent of the Oak Lawn Symphonic Band
at the organization's January 1985
meeting. Other officers elected
were Dennis Metz, Vice President;
Jerome Sims, Secretary; Steve
Schirrmacher, Treasurer; Charles
Dunnam, Librarian; and Chuck
Nicholas and Kathy Hennig,
Members -at -Large.
The membership unanimously de-
cided to expand the Board to seat
three non-hand members. Alan Ross
will be the first such Board
member. Others interested in the
work of the Greater Dallas Music
Foundation, the parent organization
of the Oak Lawn Symphonic Band,
should call Jacobs at 960-1927.
The band also voted to attend the
Gay Games in San Francisco in 1986.
Those interested in the exciting
activities set for 1985 and in the
trip in 1986 should call 960-1927
for information, or come to the
band's rehearsals which are held
Tuesday evenings at 6:45pm at the
Metropolitan Community Church, 2701
Reagan, Dallas. All are welcome.AIDS

Health Dept.
by Mike Richards
With the increasing awareness in
the gay community of the importance
of good health the Alliance wishes
to expand its role by providing
information about health with an
emphasis on AIDS.
Starting in the near future
r (watch for news releases in all gay
y media), the Health Department will
u sponsor Health Night on the first
and third Wednesdays of each month
at 7pm in the Community Center.
The first Health Night will deal
with stress and is tentatively
scheduled for February 20th.
Currently, the Health Department
is posting "Do Not Take The Test"
posters in area businesses and
bars. This is in response to the
HTLV-III/LAV virus antibodies test
that will soon be available. The
antibodies test does not diagnose
AIDS, as many think. Neither does
the test tell if oneis infectious
or immune. No gay male should have
the results become part of his med-
ical record. Too much is at stake
--like denial of insurance because
of pre-existing conditions (a
positive result to the HTLV-III/LAV
antibodies test) and pre-employment
considerations.
More information is available at
the Gay Community Center. Everyone
is urged to be as knowledgeable as
possible concerning this test.
This test has the potential of
being one of the biggest problems
facing gay males today because the
results might get into the wrong
hands.
Along these same lines, theCome see
"The Boys..."
"The Boys in the Band," by special
arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.,
will be presented as aDGA fundraiser on
seven nights and two afternoons this
month in the auditorium at the rear of
the Community Center.
This once-controversial play opens on
Valentine's Day at 7:15pm with a wine
and cheese reception following the
performance. Admission this night is $7
per person.
On February 15th and 16th, you can
meet the cast after the play. Admission
is $5 with the curtain at 8pm. On
Sunday, February 17th, the play has a
3:30pm matinee and a 7:30pm evening
performance, admission at each is $5 per
person.
"The Boys..." continues on Friday,
February 22nd with an 8pm curtain. The
cast once again invites you to stav for
a wine and cheese reception. Admission
is $7.
The show continues with $5
performances at 8pm on Saturday,
February 23rd, and at 3:30pm and 7:30pm
on Sunday, February 24th, when "The
Boys..." finally closes.
The seating capacity at each perform-
ance is only 50 persons, so don't come
late.Health Department strongly advises
Health Department strongly advises
no gay male to donate blood. Your
blood will be screened for
HTLV-III/LAV antibodies with no
guarantee of confidentiality.
The Health Department does, how-
ever, support the screening of
blood by blood banks as to keep the
nation's blood supply free from
contamination by HTLV-III/LAV. We
also support use of the test for
research, but again, only when
confidentiality is guaranteed.
Remember only we--gay males--can
prevent the spread of AIDS. Be
responsible not only to yourself,
but to others. Do not give blood.
Practice safe sex. Educate your-
self and your friends. And we will
overcome AIDS.
