Group's petition cites judge's remarks about gays... actions
A group of Dallas County lawyers is ask-
m1kg the Texas Supreme Court to remove
state District Judge Jack Hampton from the
bench because of remarks he made about
two homosexual murder victims.
The request came in a petition the law-
yers signed and submitted Thursday to
state District Judge Ron Chapman, who will
forward it to the Supreme Court. The Dallas
Gay Alliance coordinated the effort.
On Nov. 29, Hampton sentenced RichardLee Bednarski Jr. to 30 years in prison for
killing two men in Reverchon Park. Two
weeks later, Hampton told the Dallas Times
Herald that "these two guys that got killed
wouldn't have been killed if they hadn't
been cruising the streets, picking up teen-
age boys."
The petition for Hampton's removal
cited two other comments Hampton made
in the interview. One was, "I' don't care
much for queers' running around on week-
ends, picking up teen-age boys. I've got a
teen-age boy."The other was, "I put prostitutes and
gays at about the same level. If these boys
had picked up two prostitutes and taken
them to the woods and killed them, I'd con-
sider that'a similar case."
After a hearing to present the petition,
Dallas Gay Alliance president William A.
Waybourn said Hampton should be re-
moved because his statements "reveal a cer-
tain bigotry and prejudice . . . in an office
that requires fairness and impartiality."
