The Howard Payne University
Brooks Derryberry resign
President to take
position at HBU
At the regularly scheduled
Board meeting of the Trustees
of Howard Payne University on
Tuesday Dr. Roger L. Brooks
resubmitted his resignation as
President effective May 31 in
order to accept the position of
Vice President of Graduate
Studies at Houston Baptist
University.
Dr. Brooks said that he was
touched by the action of the
Board at the January meeting
when it requested him to
withdraw his resignation. And
he stated "I have given long
and careful consideration to the
request but I have not changed
my mind."
Dr. Brooks continued "While
my six and a half years tenure
as President has been enjoyable
and rewarding I have missed
greatly my association with the
academic areas of ad-
ministration and I look with
great pleasure upon assuming
my new responsibilities in
Houston."
' I should like to express my
appreciation to the Board
Trustees and to the people
Brownwood for their strong and
continuous support. I have
great respect for the institution
and the city. My family and I
wish them well and we shall
watch their continued growth
and development with
pleasure."
W. Gene Porter Chairman
Board of Trustees stated that
he understood Dr. Brooks's
feelings and respected his
decision of the matter. The
Board accepted Dr. Brook'
resignation with regret. He
stated that a committee had
been appointed and that a
search for a new president
would begin immeditely.
Porter said "I know that I
speak on behalf of my fellow
colleagues the trustees
administrators faculty student
body and the HPU alumni
association in wishing Dr.
Brooks and his family the very
best in all of his endeavors."

dicated that he will also go to
Sam Houston.
"There's not any one
reason" said Derryberry when
asked why he is leaving Howard
Payne. "I realize their program
has not been too good the past
few years. It may be a good op-
portunity." He said however 'They
(Sam Houston) totally com-
mitted themselves to have an

ference. From that standpoint
it's a good job."
Derryberry replaces Denny
Price who resigned in March
after four seasons in which
SHSU won only 35 of 106.
Hamilton said it was a hard
decision for him to make but
"we are very excited about the
possibilities Sam Houston State
presented to us" he added.
As for the unenthusiastic at-
titude at SHSU toward basket-
ball Derryberry said "we've
got to life it up but no matter
what the crowds are un-
believable at Brownwood
Coliseum. I can't say enough
about them." Next year the
Lone Star Conference will be
returning to Huntsville which
means that Derryberry will
have been the host coach for the
tournament five out of six years
of its existence. The tour-
nament was in Brownwood for
four years before moving to
Huntsville this winter. He also
said "I'm very appreciative of
HPU and the people of Brown-
wood. It has been a great six
years for me with a lot of
memories I'll never forget
Howard Payne will be a hard
act to follow."
But he said he remembers the
losses at Howard Payne more
than the wins. However he
..mentioned two highlights in
1976 when HP beat St. Mary's to
go to the national tournament
and a game at East Texas State
two years ago when HP was
down by 19 points in the second
half and came back to win.
"The hardest thing for me
was to tell the players" he
revealed. "I hope I can put
together another group like
them."
Marshall Davis co-captain of
the team this year said "It was
a shock! However he added
"He'll build a good program
but we'll beat the tar out of
them (Sam Houston) ne
year."
He said "I wish the at.
department and the school iu-
best of luck in the coming
years."
Athletic director Harold
Mayo said his phone has been
"ringing off the wall" with
inquiries from interested
coaches ever since the an-
nouncement was made. Mayo
has set no timetable for finding
a new coach.
Names that have been men-
tioned are Ed Mesbarger at
Angelo State and Jim Webb
former head coach at East
Texas Baptist College and
assistant at ET. Webb is now
working on his doctorate at ET.
