Derryberry's exit
not the end
Note to readers: I decided to revive my column
for a serious matter the resignation of Bob
Derrybcrry.

Howard Payne athletics trying to make a comeback in the
Lone Star Conference was dealt a staggering but not fatal
blow this week when Bob Derryberry head basketball coach
announced he was leaving HP to take the head coaching job at
Sam Houston State another LSC school. Assistant coach Jim
Hamilton will also be going with Derryberry.
Derryberry is a great coach. Howard Payne will miss him and
his brand of basketball. Obviously conditions will be better for
him at Sam Houston or he wouldn't be leaving. Derryberry has
built HP into a national contender and he might be abl e to do the
same at Sam Houston but not for a while. Sam Houston was last
in the conference this season and lacks an essential ingredient
fan support.
But everyone can sit around and talk about how great it was
but they should talk about how great it is going to be. Four of five
starters are returning and if a good coach comes along soon
HP will still be a national contender.
The school needs to start looking for an established college
head coach or assistant coach soon and hire him.
If I were a betting person I'd be willing to wager that Howard
Payne will beat Sam Houston next year and I'd also be willing
to bet that HP finishes ahead of Sam in the conference race.
What I'm not so sure about is the Howard Payne fans. This is
not the end of the world and the Jackets need and deserve just
as much or more support next year as the amount they received
this year. I want to see a packed Coliseum next Feb. 18 root
Howard Payne on to victory regardless of who or what Bob
Derryberry is. It is not the end of HP basketball because
Derryberry won't be here next year.

Mayo looking for lright' coach
Part of the basketball tradition at
Howard Payne University has been its
ability to replace top-flight coaches
with top-flight coaches.
The same was true five years ago
when Henson stepped down and
assistant coach Bob Derryberry moved
in and launched a program that was to
produce a 10743 record and four
straight 20-game seasons.
Now Derryberry has paced up and
shuffled off .o Sam Houston State
leaving Athletic Director Harold Mayo
with the task of finding a replacement.
Mayo is keeping in mind that both
Henson and Derryberry came to HPU
with junior college coaching ex-
perience. "We're interested in anybody
who is interested in us and I'm not
saying we wouldn't talk to high school
coaches" Mayo said of the coaching
hunt. "But the first thing that comes to
mind is the junior college coach. He not
only would have college experience but
he also might bring some of his better
players with him."
It's late in the recruiting season but
Mayo isn't pressing the panic button.
"Sure we are going to move fast" he
said. "But hiring a coach in a hurry is
not the most important factor. We want
to make sure we get the right person
one who could fit into the community."
Mayo said he had no idea who the new
coach would be but he anticipates no
problem in finding a good one. "Bob is a
fine person and outstanding coach" he
said "but at the same time we should
be able to find another one. This is a
great opportunity for someone. We
have one of the better if not the best
basketball budgets in the conference.
There has to be a great deal of interest
in the job. We've always been strong in
basketball we have four starters back
next year including probably the best
player in the conference in Gary
Hopkins who has two more years of
eligibility."
Mayo has already been on the phone
"talking to basketball people I know
getting opinions and recommendations."
