When Judas Went Out
During the Passover meal
Judas left Jesus and the other
Eleven Apostles and “went
out; and it was night.”
He left the best company on
earth. The fellowship of
Christians is the most
rewarding of all. It offers the
greatest opportunities for one
to achieve full meaning and
most satisfying values in life. It
enables one to expand one’s
life to the utmost greatness in
divine calling and service. In
the holy household of God, as
a child of God through faith in
Christ, a person grows in divine
likeness and knows comforts
and blessings only known by
faithful Christians.
James A. Michener, Pulitzer
prize-winner, when he was
asked his opinion about the
institutional church, replied
that in his thinking it serves a
marvelous role in helping
people and that if he went to
live in a strange city he would
not want to marry a girl he
might meet in a bar; but he
would become active in a
church to find someone like
himself.
Judas went away from the
only salvation available to men.
For some reason or other Judas
never accepted Christ fully into
his life. He complained about
Mary’s using the costly
ointment to annoint Jesus.
John tells us (12:4-6), “But
Judas . .., ‘Why was . this
ointment not sold for three
hundred denarii and given to
the poor?’ This he said, not
that he cared for the poor but
because he was a thief, and as
he had the money box he used
to take what was put into it.”
Jesus washed Judas’ feet that
night, too. But Judas just
seemed to pay no attention to
the way of compassionate love
and self-giving in service, which
Jesus tried so hard to teach
him. He stubbornly continued
in the ways of the world and
sin. This is so true of many
today.
So he went out that night
probably impatient with the
delay in revolution and
restoration of a glorious Jewish

worldly kingdom. He was tired
of carrying a small bag of
change: he wanted to be the
treasurer of a mighty empire.
He wanted glory, wealth, and
he wanted them without delay.
Jesus had demonstrated his
miraculous power. He must be
forced to act, Judas probably
concluded. Judas went his way,
not Christ’s; and he went to
death instead of life.
Judas left behind and
missed the most precious
experiences God allows to
men. He missed the institution
and participation in the Lord’s
Supper, Holy Communion. He
missed, “A new commandment
I give to you, that you love one
another; even as I have loved
you, that you also love one
another.” He missed the
Parable of the Vine and the
fate of unfruitful branches. He
missed the knowledge of the
true way and kingdom. He
missed the precious prayer
Jesus prayed for and with his
disciples. He missed the realm
of eternal mansions and life —
and much more.
Judas went out to perdition.
The spirit in which he left is
revealed in his question to the
chief priests (Matt. 26:15)
“What will you give me if I
deliver him to you?” Those
who reject Christ and his
church and go away from the
fellowship of Christians and
Christ find the alluring worldly
things, as Judas did, like a
child’s soap bubbles; attractive
for a while, and then they
burst and are gone forever.
Self-interest meets self-interest.
When Judas was of no more
use to the chief priests they
had little care for him. The
ways of sin are disappointing.
Judas found no meaning, love,
security, promise and limited
hope. His life was empty. He
went out and hanged himself.
How different Judas’ life
could have been. If he had
given up the world and
accepted Christ, the Word,
Spirit and way and continued
in the fellowship of the church,
he would have found meaning,
glory, greatness, peace, wealth,
security and life indeed.
